Breaking Through Job Search Paralysis

Breaking Through Job Search Paralysis

Hi, I’m Denise

I’m Denise Matthews, a Careers & Executive Coach with over 30 years of experience helping professionals like you find clarity and confidence in their career journeys. I specialise in working with mid-career and senior leaders, guiding them through challenges like job transitions, self-doubt, and the daunting task of starting over.

Today, I want to talk to you about one of the most common obstacles in job searching:?paralysis.

Why Job Search Paralysis Happens

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”?- Lao Tzu

Looking for a new role can feel overwhelming. There’s the pressure of crafting a standout CV, perfecting your LinkedIn profile, navigating countless applications, and preparing for interviews. When faced with so much to do, many people find themselves stuck—unable to take that first step.

Psychologists call this ‘task paralysis’, and it’s especially common among high-achieving professional. The fear of failure, combined with perfectionism, can lead to us overthinking, procrastination, and ultimately, inaction.

But:?progress doesn’t have to be perfect. Small, consistent steps can help you break through the paralysis and build momentum.? I was always taught by my very wise Mum that ‘Good is better than perfect’ and we all learn from the glitches we face along the journey.

Get Unstuck and Move Forward

If you relate to this, here’s how you can start tackling job search paralysis today:

1.?Break It Down

  • Divide your job search into manageable chunks. For example: Day 1: Update your personal profile on LinkedIn. Day 2: List your top 5 achievements for your CV. Day 3: Research 3 companies you’d like to work for.

2.?Focus on Quick Wins

  • Start with a task that feels easy, like connecting with a former colleague on LinkedIn. Achieving even one small step can boost your confidence and motivate you to keep going.

3.?Embrace Imperfection

  • Your CV doesn’t need to be perfect before you start applying. Tailor it as you go and always tweak it based on the job. Remember:?an imperfect application sent is better than a perfect one that stays on your desktop.

4.?Build a Routine

  • Dedicate specific times each day to your job search. Consistency, even for 15 minutes a day, can lead to significant progress over time.
