Sippers,
Have you put yourself in a position to succeed?
As we navigate the complexities of the modern workplace, ageism remains a significant barrier for many seasoned professionals. This past year, I took charge of my career and created my own opportunities. The truth is, companies didn't come looking for me; I had to seek them out. As Milton Berle wisely said, "If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door."
?What’s Happening?
?Ageism in the workplace is a growing concern. According to a 2023 report by the AARP, nearly 80% of workers aged 50 and older have experienced some form of age discrimination. Many companies are eliminating older workers or failing to hire them due to deep-rooted biases. They often perceive older employees as less adaptable, overly set in their ways, or lacking the technological skills required for today's fast-paced environments. Unfortunately, these stereotypes can lead to unjust treatment and missed opportunities for talented individuals who have much to offer.
When I left my last job and dove into the job search, I was met with silence, despite being qualified for many roles. Why?
? It was my age.
In an attempt to fit in, I even tried to hide my age on my profile. Did it help? Not really! I soon realized that the roles I was chasing weren't the right fit for me or for the companies I targeted. They were looking for something different—something that didn’t include a seasoned veteran with industry knowledge.
?Why Companies Are Hesitant to Hire Older Workers
?There are several reasons why companies may be reluctant to hire older workers:
1. Stereotypes and Misconceptions: Many employers hold outdated beliefs about older workers being less tech-savvy or less willing to learn new skills.
2. Cultural Fit: Some companies prioritize a youthful culture, mistakenly believing that younger employees will be more energetic and innovative.
3. Cost Concerns: Employers may assume that older workers will demand higher salaries or come with increased health care costs.
?4. Lack of Diversity Awareness: Age diversity is often overlooked in discussions about workplace diversity, leading to a lack of initiatives aimed at fostering an age-inclusive environment.
Finding Your Role in the Current Environment
So, how can we combat ageism and successfully find roles in this environment? Here are some strategies:
1. Be Proactive: Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. Knock on doors, make calls, and engage with your network.

2. Leverage Your Experience: Highlight the unique skills and insights you bring to the table. Many companies are beginning to appreciate the value of experience, especially in leadership and mentorship roles.
3. Network and Connect: Share your story and connect with others who have overcome similar challenges. You never know where a conversation might lead. Platforms like LinkedIn can be invaluable for building connections.
4. Be Open to New Opportunities: Sometimes, the best roles are in unexpected places. Embrace flexibility and be willing to explore different industries or positions.
5. Showcase Your Superpowers: What unique qualities do you possess? For me, I discovered that I’m a connector. I’ve built relationships across the industry, leading to amazing opportunities that align with my passions.
