Breaking the taboo, and why we need to talk about death.

Research and our experience shows that people often struggle to make decisions when they are grieving, and that planning a funeral can be difficult and increase stress levels at an already very emotional time.

Here at Maillards we pride ourselves in being friendly and approachable. We like to help others to plan ahead, and are always on hand to answer questions. We encourage people of all ages to fill out our 'Lasting wishes' form either through the website or by filling out one of our paper forms.

Leaving clear instructions as to what you want, how you would like to leave this world takes all of that heartache away from loved ones that remain. So what stops us from making plans?

Excuses range from 'I don't want to talk about it, it is too uncomfortable and it may upset others' to 'it could lead to a disagreement, I don't know where to start and I don't want to tempt fate!'

The reality is that there is no better time to talk about it than in the present when you have time to think. Writing down your Lasting Wishes is not binding, costs nothing and you can update them at anytime you want at no cost. - All you are doing is leaving a written list as to what you'd like. You are answering the questions so that others don't have to.

We can help guide you through the process if you'd like and help you to answer basic questions such as 'cremation or burial', 'would you like a religious ceremony', 'have you thought about a wake'?

Death is inevitable and in many ways unites all of us. Beyond planning the funeral we'd also encourage you to seek legal advice to write a Will and consider how to manage your financial affairs.
