Early in my career, I was bypassed for a promotion because I thought I didn't have what it takes. I later realized that it wasn't just about my qualifications or performance; it was about my visibility and willingness to advocate for myself.
In many workplaces, hard work alone isn't enough to get noticed - you also need to communicate your achievements and aspirations.
Speaking up in the workplace is vital for several reasons. Firstly, it demonstrates confidence and self-awareness, qualities that are highly valued in any professional setting. Secondly, it helps others understand your contributions and career goals, paving the way for recognition and advancement. Lastly, advocating for yourself ensures that you are considered for opportunities that align with your strengths and ambitions.
Many people hesitate to speak up in the workplace for a variety of reasons, including:
What if they challenge my point: A common concern is that their ideas or feedback will be dismissed, criticized, or not valued. This fear can stem from past experiences or from a workplace culture that doesn't encourage open communication.
I am shy: Some individuals doubt their abilities or knowledge, feeling that they aren't "expert enough" to contribute. This lack of self-confidence can prevent them from sharing their ideas or advocating for themselves.
I don't want to ruffle feathers: Some people avoid speaking up to prevent potential conflicts or disagreements. They may worry that their input will upset others or lead to uncomfortable situations.
I am a small fish: Professionals may feel that their position within the organization doesn't afford them the right or opportunity to speak up, especially if they are in a lower-level role.
I am unsure how to go about it: In some workplaces, there may be a lack of clear channels or safe spaces for employees to voice their concerns, ideas, or feedback. This can create uncertainty about how to communicate effectively.
The last time I spoke I was shut: If someone has spoken up in the past and faced negative consequences - such as being ignored, reprimanded, or retaliated against—they may be reluctant to do so again.
My job is at stake: Especially in uncertain economic climates, people may fear that speaking up could jeopardize their job security. They may worry about being seen as troublemakers or as challenging the status quo.
I love the coziness in the backbench: Some individuals may feel that speaking up is the responsibility of others, such as management or those in more senior positions, and that their role is to follow rather than lead.
Why It's Important to Speak Up
Visibility: If you're not vocal about your accomplishments and aspirations, it’s easy for others to overlook them. Being proactive in sharing your achievements helps you get noticed by decision-makers.

Confidence: Speaking up boosts your confidence. When you voice your ideas, ask questions, or seek feedback, you build a reputation as someone engaged and invested in the organization.
Opportunities: Advocacy can open doors to new opportunities. When you express your interest in taking on more responsibility or exploring new roles, you position yourself as a proactive and ambitious team member.
Practical Ways to Speak Up
Share your achievements: Don’t wait for your annual review to highlight your successes. Regularly update your manager on your progress and accomplishments. This keeps your contributions top-of-mind and sets you up for new opportunities.
Seek feedback: Proactively ask for feedback from your peers and superiors. This shows your commitment to growth and helps you understand how you are perceived in the workplace. Use this feedback to improve and shape your professional narrative.
Express your career aspirations: Have candid conversations with your supervisor about your career goals. Expressing where you want to go in your career helps others see you in those roles and may influence decision-making when opportunities arise.
Participate in meetings: Whether it's suggesting new ideas or providing input on projects, actively participating in meetings is a great way to make your voice heard. It shows your engagement and willingness to contribute to the team's success.
Network internally: Building relationships within your organization is crucial. Attend company events, join cross-functional teams, and seek out mentors. These connections can be invaluable in advocating for your career growth.
To be noticed, it's essential to combine excellent work with strategic self-promotion. Ensure that your LinkedIn profile reflects your achievements and goals, and don't hesitate to share your successes on professional platforms. Moreover, volunteer for high-visibility projects that showcase your skills and increase your exposure to senior leadership.
Remember, speaking up is not about boasting; it's about ensuring your talents and contributions are recognized. It's about positioning yourself for growth and ensuring you are not overlooked. The next time you hesitate to share your achievements or voice your ambitions, remember that your voice is your power.
