Breaking the silence: Addressing the loneliness of leadership

Leading a business unit, SME, startup, or multinational inevitably exposes you to a phenomenon that is often underestimated but deeply felt: the loneliness of leadership. According to a study by Bpi France Lab, there's almost a 50% chance that you, as a leader, will experience this isolation.

I've personally felt this isolation in my roles as VP and CEO, despite my natural inclination towards teamwork and openness to feedback. Whether it's making complex decisions under the watchful eyes of your executive committee, navigating divisive strategic plans, or managing crucial financial and organizational choices, these are moments where you may feel alone, called to make a difference.

Recognize and act

The first crucial step is recognizing the danger that this loneliness poses. It can be devastating both personally and for the company as a whole.

The second step is to break this isolation with urgency. Numerous options are available, but recognizing and effectively mobilizing them is key. I personally thank my close teams for supporting me through challenging times, and I know some of you will recognize yourselves.

The central role of coaching

The most valuable advice I can offer, drawing from my experience as a leader and now as an executive coach, is to seek guidance. Preferably, choose a coach who has faced similar experiences, understands your daily challenges, and grasps your specific stakes. Coaching is an extraordinary tool to break loneliness in a constructive way, to exchange ideas, confront thoughts, or share doubts with someone who truly understands your professional environment.

Broadening perspectives

Beyond coaching, other actions can be highly effective in combating leadership loneliness:

  • Form a advisory board: Surround yourself with experts and advisors to enrich decision-making processes.
  • Develop a peer network: Engaging with other leaders allows for the sharing of valuable experiences and advice.
  • Promote collective intelligence: Involving more team members in decision-making processes helps reduce isolation.
  • Take care of yourself: Don’t neglect your mental and physical health. Regular breaks, physical exercise, and personal support can make all the difference.

I invite you to open the conversation and share your experiences. Together, let’s explore the best strategies to overcome the loneliness of leadership and strengthen your leadership within your organization.
