Breaking the Mould – From Salesperson to Scootee

Breaking the Mould – From Salesperson to Scootee

Our Scootees are truly a diverse bunch! Many of them held jobs from different industries before joining us. Adeline, a Scootee who has been with us for over a year, shares with us what compelled her to leave a sales role for a career in the skies!

What was the tipping factor for leaving your sales job?

When I was still doing sales, my job performance was solely based on numbers and sales targets. I decided that there was more to work (and life) than that, and I wanted a job that gives me more value and purpose. After joining Scoot, I was able to meet people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, explore different destinations and create many fond memories that I can look back on and smile about in the future.

Furthermore, I have aspired to be a cabin crew since 6 years ago, so when the opportunity presented itself, I just went for it!

What attracted you to Scoot?

I was attracted to Scoot’s layover destinations to my favourite countries such as Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Australia – they are all on my travel wish list! For flight crew, layover flights are flights where crew have to stay overnight in the destination (from just a day to a few days) for operational reasons. During such trips, we get the chance to explore the cities we land in before reporting back for duty, and it’s like a mini-holiday.

And of course, Scootitude! It is a joy to work alongside people who are passionate about what they are doing, and at the same time feel free to celebrate their own individuality as well as that of others. We’re often encouraged to be spontaneous, be who we are (including having colourful dyed hair), and have fun in the air!

How was the transition from your sales job to being a Scootee? What were the challenges that you faced and how did you overcome it?

In sales, I had standard pitches to follow closely to. After becoming a Scootee, I learned to be more versatile as each flight is unique. Multitasking was one thing I picked up quickly on the job. I learned to be more aware of my surroundings during service so as to not compromise safety.

I was nervous at the beginning, but with practice and guidance from my colleagues, I became more confident in handling tasks. Being receptive to feedback and learning from my mistakes helped me to overcome my weaknesses.

In a sales role, I was also evaluated just as an individual and the job was “every man for himself”. However, in Scoot, teamwork is crucial, and we are always on the look-out to help each other. The most important learning points to me are to remain humble and be polite to my fellow colleagues and our customers.

How long have you been with Scoot? Any memorable experience to share with us?

I have been with Scoot for a year and 4 months now. Ushering the New Year in the air in 2017 as well as in 2018, and being on the first Scoot flight to arrive in Singapore in 2018 were some of my most memorable experiences here! I was also able to enjoy layovers in European destinations such as Athens in Greece and Berlin in Germany since I have never been to Europe before. As a Scootee, it has given me opportunities to travel to places I have never imagined I would be able to visit previously and I love it!

What is the coolest thing that you have done on board the flight?

Definitely Scootitude flights! My favourite Scootitude flight was when we held a “Scoot’s Next Top Model” competition onboard! Passengers participating had to showcase their creativity by creating their costumes using Scoot blankets, cups, chopsticks, etc. The models then cat-walked down the aisle to a cheering crowd. It was awesome to see how everyone was engaged and enjoyed the flight.

How did you and your fellow crew go about planning the “Scoot’s Next Top Model” competition? Where did the idea come from?

Scootees are encouraged to conduct Scootitude activities onboard our flights as a way to involve passengers while having fun, and so we came up with the idea. It was loosely based on those top model shows that you see on TV. We wanted to compel our passengers to participate and display their creativity in designing the outfits for their models – and this was all done with the limited resources and time provided! The response was great as everyone onboard cheered and had fun.

Where do you see yourself in 2019? What’s next for you career-wise?

Definitely still flying! I also aim to take on more responsibilities and become a complex leader next year or explore other internal job opportunities at Scoot if I’m not flying anymore. As for now, I am focused on flying as it is still my favourite job by far!
