Introduction:
Good afternoon, everyone! Thank you for being here today. Today, I want to share a deeply personal journey?with all of you. My name is Dr Suraya, and I am an NLP Master practitioner with over 15 years of experience in education. I have been invited to speak at this TEDx event on the theme of "Breaking the Mold," and I believe it is?time we break free from the chains that bind our understanding of mental health.
?
Opening Story:
When I was just six years old, I was diagnosed with ADHD. It was an extraordinary moment in my life because it marked the beginning of my unique journey, one that led me to understand and appreciate the incredible power of mental health challenges. Growing up, I faced numerous obstacles, but little did I know that these obstacles would?shape me into the person I am today.
?
Transition 1:
Mental health is a topic that affects us all, and it's time we shed light on it. Today, I want to share my story and offer insights into how we can embrace mental health challenges for personal growth. My hope is that by sharing my experiences, we can break free from the stigma surrounding mental health and create a more supportive and understanding environment for ourselves and others.
Shattering Stereotypes
I want to begin by shattering the stereotypes surrounding mental health. We often associate mental health challenges with weakness or inadequacy, but in reality, they can be a source of strength and resilience. My own journey with ADHD taught me to think differently, to approach problems creatively, and to persevere in the face of adversity. Let's challenge the mold by redefining what mental health means to us.
?
Personal Story: The Power of ADHD: Redefining Mental Health
Let me take you back to my childhood, where my journey with ADHD began. As a six-year-old, I was full of energy, curiosity, and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. But the world around me seemed to move at a different pace, constantly urging me to conform and fit into predefined molds. It didn't take long for my teachers and peers to notice my restlessness and inability to focus, leading to my diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD.
?For years, I felt the weight of the stereotypes associated with mental health challenges. I was labeled as "distracted," "disruptive," and even "lazy." Society expected me to conform to a narrow definition of success, one that seemed impossible for me to achieve. But little did they know, my ADHD held within it an extraordinary power—a power to think differently, to approach problems creatively, and to cultivate resilience in the face of adversity.
Growing up, I often found myself daydreaming, lost in a world of possibilities and imagination. While others saw this as a hindrance, I saw it as a gift. My mind worked in unconventional ways, making connections between seemingly unrelated ideas and concepts. This ability to think outside the box fuelled my creativity and allowed me to come up with innovative solutions to complex problems.
I vividly remember a particular incident in school that showcased the power of my ADHD. Our class was assigned a Geography group project that required us to design a folio regarding the local municipal town planning. As the ideas started flowing, I found myself making connections between concepts I had learned in different subjects. I harnessed my hyperfocus — the intense concentration that often accompanies ADHD — and channeled it into researching, brainstorming, and presenting our ideas. It was a defining moment for me, as I realised that my ADHD was not a limitation but a catalyst for innovation and achievement.
My journey with ADHD has taught me invaluable life lessons. It has shown me the power of perseverance and the importance of embracing my unique strengths. Rather than viewing my mental health challenge as a weakness or inadequacy, I choose to see it as a wellspring of resilience, adaptability, and creativity.
Today, I stand before you as an NLP Master practitioner, utilising the tools and techniques of Neuro-Linguistic Programming to help others unlock their potential and overcome their own mental health challenges. Through my experiences, I have come to believe that mental health is not a binary concept of "normal" or "abnormal." It is a spectrum of diverse experiences that shape who we are as individuals and as a society.
So, let us challenge the mold and redefine what mental health means to us. Remember, our mental health challenges do not define us; they shape us.
Embracing Individuality
One of the most powerful lessons I learned was the importance of embracing individuality. Society tends to label individuals based on their mental health challenges, often overlooking the unique strengths and perspectives they bring to the table. It is time we celebrate our differences and recognise the value that each person, regardless of their mental health, brings to our communities.
?
Personal Story:?Embracing My Uniqueness: A Journey of Self-Acceptance
Growing up with ADHD, I often felt like an outsider, constantly struggling to fit into the mold of what society deemed "normal." It seemed that my differences were perceived as deficiencies, and I yearned for acceptance and understanding. But little did I know that my journey towards self-acceptance would teach me the transformative power of embracing individuality.
In my early teenage years, I found solace in creative writing. It became my sanctuary, a realm where I could freely express myself without fear of judgment or rejection. Through the written word, I discovered a voice that resonated with my innermost thoughts and emotions. It was within those lines and verses that I began to celebrate my uniqueness, unapologetically.
One day, during a particularly challenging period in my life, I decided to share a piece of my writing with my English teacher. With trepidation, I handed her my poem, exposing a vulnerable part of myself. I expected critique or indifference, but what I received was something entirely unexpected.
She not only praised my writing but also connected with the emotions I had conveyed. She recognised the depth of my perspective and encouraged me to share my work with the school community. It was in that moment that I realised the value that my unique experiences and perspective brought to others.
As I started sharing my poetry with my peers, something incredible happened. Rather than being labeled as "the loud, crazy ?girl ," I became known as "the poet with a powerful voice." My mental health challenge no longer defined me but became an integral part of my identity—one that brought strength, resilience, and a unique perspective to the table.
Embracing my individuality allowed me to break free from the shackles of societal expectations and discover the beauty in my differences. I began to appreciate the myriad of perspectives that exist within our communities, recognising that every person, regardless of their mental health, possesses unique strengths and insights.
Through my journey, I learned that when we celebrate our differences, we create a tapestry of diversity that enriches our communities. We each have a story to tell, a voice to be heard, and a contribution to make. It is through embracing individuality that we can break down the barriers of prejudice and build bridges of understanding and compassion.
Imagine a world where we value each person for who they are, rather than focusing on what may make them different. A world where individuals are not limited by the labels society imposes upon them, but instead are recognised for their inherent worth and the immense value they bring. It is within our power to create this world — a world that celebrates the kaleidoscope of human experiences and perspectives.

Transition 2:
Now, I want to turn our attention to the specific challenges faced by university students. This is a critical phase in our lives when we are expected to fit into predetermined molds and meet societal expectations. But what happens when mental health challenges disrupt this path? How can we break free from the mold and find our own way to success and well-being?

Navigating University Life
University life can be overwhelming, especially for those with mental health challenges. I want to share my personal experiences and provide practical strategies for managing stress, improving focus, and finding a balance between academic demands and self-care. By recognizing and understanding our unique needs, we can navigate university life successfully and break free from the constraints of societal norms.
?
Personal Story: Finding Balance in the Chaos: A Journey through University
?When I stepped onto the bustling campus of my university, excitement and trepidation intermingled within me. As a student with ADHD, I knew that the journey ahead would be filled with unique challenges. Navigating university life while managing my mental health required a delicate balance between academic demands and self-care, but I was determined to find my path.
?During my first semester, I found myself engulfed in a whirlwind of assignments, deadlines, and social activities. The pressure to excel academically while fitting into the societal mold of a "typical" student was immense. I soon realized that if I continued to conform to these expectations without considering my mental health needs, I would be setting myself up for burnout and disappointment.
?It was during a particularly stressful week that I hit a breaking point. Overwhelmed with deadlines and struggling to concentrate, I decided to seek support from the university's counseling services. Through therapy, I learned practical strategies to manage stress and improve focus. The counselor emphasized the importance of self-care and finding a balance between my academic pursuits and personal well-being.
?With newfound knowledge and determination, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and adaptation. I implemented small changes in my daily routine that made a significant impact. I established a study schedule that allowed for breaks and incorporated mindfulness exercises to enhance focus. Additionally, I discovered the benefits of physical exercise, which helped alleviate stress and improve my overall well-being.
?To stay organised, I utilised digital tools and apps that helped me manage assignments, deadlines, and important dates. Breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable chunks allowed me to approach them with clarity and reduced the overwhelming feeling that often accompanied them.
But it wasn't just about academic strategies; it was about recognising and honouring my unique needs. I learned to prioritise self-care, understanding that taking care of my mental health was not a luxury but a necessity. This meant carving out time for activities that brought me joy and relaxation, such as spending time in nature, pursuing creative hobbies, and connecting with supportive friends who understood and accepted me for who I was.
Navigating university life with a mental health challenge requires a shift in perspective. It requires recognising that success is not measured solely by academic achievements but by the growth and well-being of the individual. It's about breaking free from the constraints of societal norms and embracing our unique journeys.
As I progressed through my university years, I found solace in the knowledge that I was not alone. I connected with support groups and organisations on campus that provided a sense of community and understanding. Together, we shared our experiences, celebrated our victories, and supported one another through the challenges.
Today, I stand before you as someone who successfully navigated university life while managing my mental health. It was not always easy, but by recognising and understanding my unique needs, I found a balance that allowed me to thrive academically and personally.
To all the university students listening today, I urge you to embrace your uniqueness. Take the time to understand your mental health needs and seek support when necessary.

Building a Supportive Community
Breaking the mold requires a collective effort. We must come together as a community to create a safe and supportive environment for mental health. I will discuss the importance of open dialogue, destigmatisation, and fostering empathy. By actively supporting one another and seeking help when needed, we can break down barriers and build a community that embraces mental health as an essential aspect of our well-being.
?
Personal Story:?From Stigma to Support: The Power of Community
In my role as an NLP Master practitioner, I have had the privilege of working with clients of all ages who face a wide range of mental health issues. It is within this diverse landscape that I have witnessed the transformative power of building a supportive community that embraces mental health as an essential aspect of our well-being.
As I engaged with clients, I discovered that the barriers they faced extended far beyond their individual struggles. Stigma, misunderstanding, and societal norms often compounded their challenges, making it difficult for them to seek help and find a supportive environment.
Realising the importance of fostering an inclusive and understanding community, I embarked on a mission to create spaces where individuals could feel safe, validated, and supported. I recognised that breaking the mold required a collective effort—one that involved open dialogue, destigmatisation, and the cultivation of empathy.
Through my practice, I actively encouraged clients to share their stories, providing a platform for them to express their experiences, triumphs, and challenges. By doing so, we shattered the silence and began to challenge the stereotypes surrounding mental health.
Recognising the power of shared experiences, I facilitated support groups that brought together individuals facing similar mental health issues. In these groups, clients could find solace in the understanding and empathy of others who had walked a similar path. Through the power of connection and support, they realised that they were not alone and that their struggles were valid.
?Beyond the walls of my practice, I collaborated with local organisations, schools, and community centres to create awareness campaigns and educational workshops. These initiatives aimed to foster empathy, provide resources, and empower individuals to take action within their own communities.
By working together, we created a network of support that transcended age, gender, and background. Clients of all ages found solace in knowing that their mental health was a priority and that they had access to a community that embraced their unique struggles and journeys.
I witnessed firsthand the impact of this supportive community as clients began to flourish, gaining confidence and a renewed sense of purpose. The barriers they faced began to crumble as understanding and acceptance took their place. Clients no longer felt defined by their mental health challenges but empowered by their resilience and growth.
To those who work in mental health or engage with clients facing various mental health issues, I encourage you to be the catalysts for change within your own communities. Create spaces for open dialogue, offer support groups, and promote education and awareness. Foster empathy and understanding, and actively challenge the stereotypes and stigmas that surround mental health.
By building a supportive community that embraces mental health, regardless of age or background, we can break free from the constraints of societal norms and create an environment where every individual feels seen, heard, and valued. Together, we can reshape the narrative surrounding mental health and pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.
Conclusion:
As I conclude my talk, I want to leave you with a powerful message: mental health challenges do not define us; they shape us. Embracing our unique experiences and using them as stepping stones for growth allows us to break free from the mold that society imposes on us. It's time to rewrite the narrative surrounding mental health and empower ourselves and others to thrive.
?
Remember, your journey is valid, your voice matters, and together, we can break free, break barriers, and break the mold.
Thank you.
