Breaking the Mask: Navigating Neuro-Distinct Experiences

In the realm of neuro-distinct experiences, the concept of masking involves concealing aspects of oneself to better assimilate into societal norms. Many neuro-divergent individuals, myself included, engage in this practice regularly, often to such an extent that it becomes second nature. Despite my openness about dyslexia, I discovered that I unconsciously mask certain limitations in my daily life.
One morning, as I instinctively utilized one of my longstanding coping mechanisms, it dawned on me how integral these tools have been in navigating challenges. This realization prompted me to explore why I unconsciously mask and how it relates to my dyslexia.
As a dyslexic individual, a significant part of my masking revolves around avoiding writing and editing documents. Over the years, I have relied on drafts and prebuilt templates to mitigate challenges. This strategy, adopted since college, has undoubtedly facilitated my ability to convey ideas without succumbing to spelling mistakes. However, it has also inadvertently confined my writing to a structured and repetitive style. While this approach ensured clarity in communication, it limited the originality of my expression. My focus was primarily on conveying ideas without the distraction of spelling errors.
Even today, I find myself gravitating towards familiar words and expressions, sometimes opting for simpler vocabulary to avoid potential confusion. In my second language, French, where gender-specific language adds complexity, I grapple with frequent mistakes.
Switching between English and French serves as another masking strategy, allowing me to communicate effectively while minimizing the risk of errors. Additionally, feigning ignorance about locations helps me avoid giving potentially inaccurate instructions, a task that often overwhelms me due to dyslexia-related challenges. Yes, I still can't differentiate my left from my right!
These personal reflections shed light on common masking strategies employed by neuro-divergent individuals, including rehearsing discussions, mirroring behaviors, and concealing personal interests. The emotional toll of masking is well-documented, contributing to increased risks of depression and burnout.

The journey from unconscious masking to embracing vulnerability and advocating for neuro-divergent rights is a profound and ongoing exploration. The personal revelation of relying on coping mechanisms, such as templates and language switching, shines a light on the intricate strategies employed to navigate a world not always accommodating to diverse cognitive experiences.
As neuro-distinct individuals, the emotional toll of masking is a heavy burden, contributing to heightened risks of depression and burnout. However, the decision to unmask, to reveal the complexities of our neuro-divergent experiences, becomes a catalyst for change. It is a step towards fostering understanding, dispelling stereotypes, and creating a more inclusive society.
The lack of Dyslexia Advocacy underscores the importance of dismantling the stigma associated with neuro-divergent conditions. While the fear of judgment and rejection persists, the potential positive impact of advocacy outweighs the temporary comfort of masking.
In this delicate balance between vulnerability and societal expectations, the question of which carries a greater cost—masking or advocating—remains complex. Yet, by daring to unmask and share our authentic narratives, we contribute to a broader dialogue that challenges preconceptions and fosters a more compassionate and understanding world. In this pursuit, the journey towards genuine advocacy becomes a powerful force for change, promising a future where neuro-divergent individuals are not only accepted but celebrated for their unique perspectives and contributions. Together let's breakdown the walls of stereotypes and stigma!
P.S if you see any mistake, feel free to let me know and welcome to my dyslexic mind.
