Breaking the ice with ChatGPT
ChatGPT, oh yes how the subject is now front and center for many of us. And will continue to be there from here on in. In one form or another.
Being the curious soul that I am, I finally gave it a test drive on some rather simple things such as writing a simple java class, a kotlin class, and creating a poem. I'd say write a poem but I'll reserve that term for the human generated content. I digress, sorry.
I am impressed. Really impressed.
The code created was spot-on and well written. Granted it was simple but it was my test run and there will be more complex examples to experiment with as I broaden my horizons with this tool.
The poem part of my experiment left me amazed. Know that I do not write poetry nor should I, that talent does not exist in my DNA and that is quite alright. I'll leave that to the poets. And ChatGPT of course.
Anyways, a request was made to generate a poem about a farm I used to help out that provided food for those in need. The application created a lovely poem (see below) and was definitely in the spirit of what was requested. Again, I am impressed.
My takeaways from this brief tour... first note is that the speed at which information was returned is truly amazing. On the flip side, there was a missing element of personal involvement to this. Or do I say the missing creative 'thing' that adds to our human experience in much of what we do? I personally thrive on creating (anything) and all that comes with it, but hey this was software I was working with and will keep that in perspective. All in all a positive first impression.
To be frank though, there is a low level of trepidation I have with the ever changing AI landscape and I owe it to myself to better understand this landscape.
Having read the open letter that was recently penned by the Community at large provided a sense of want to be learned in the space. AI has shaped and will continue to shape a part of our lives so now is as good a time as ever to better understand that space that I believe holds so much promise for us all.
Trepidation aside, the bigger question (for me) is how best to incorporate the use of ChatGPT and similar applications into the day to day professional life to realize its potential. And dare I say personal life as well?
And here is the poem in homage to Gaining Ground. Enjoy!
