Breaking Habits

Vibration Analysis Training and Certification
I want to continue with the theme of continuous improvement. We are creatures of habit - so much so that we often don't even realize it! We tend to do the same things day in and day out - both at work and in life - to such an extent that we become numb to what we are even doing. What are we doing??? Are we awake? Are we even still alive?
This week's exercise
If you are so inclined, try something new. Break a habit, change a routine. Maybe you have been having the same argument or disagreement with someone for a long time. How about changing your approach? Come at it from a different angle. Loosen your grip a bit. Allow some flexibility in your stance. Try to see things from their point of view.
See if there's a way to resolve the conflict. Do you always have to be "right?" How about instead of trying to convince the other person that you are right and they are wrong you focus instead on getting along?
If you don't have a personal conflict to work with, how about simply changing your routine a bit? Sit in a different seat in the cafeteria, take a different route to work, spend an evening doing something you have never done before. Take a class, learn something new. Interact with some different people, maybe people who are not like you? Get out of your comfort zone. Expand your boundaries.
We develop habits to protect ourselves from reality, to hide from what is really happening, to turn ourselves off. It's difficult to break habits. It's uncomfortable. It takes effort. But, when we do it frequently, it keeps us on our toes. It keeps us more in touch with reality, with life, with what is actually happening. Life is much more fulfilling when we take our heads out of the sand.
When we do this at work, we keep our companies more inline with the realities of the market place. We become more attuned to what's changing and we are ready to take on the challenge.
