It’s that time of year when people seem to take stock…. How was this past year? Did we grow? Did we learn? Were we our best selves? Our answers usually help us resolve what we will do better/differently in the coming year. For as old as any of us are, I feel safe to say that we have done this exercise most of these years! Do we get better at it? Are we “getting it”?
During my “Feeling of Balance” (feelingofbalance.com) workshops and keynotes, I suggest that you “treat your values as your personal mission statement”. Identify the things that you most value in your life including your personal hopes and aspirations. Write them down. Keep them near you and visible- just as the corporate mission statement is likely displayed in a prominent location, and let them be your everyday guide.
We have a chance to begin anew every day; every week could be seen as a new start. Every month brings new possibilities. Why then, do we wait until the end of the year to reflect on the past and commit to our future selves? Sadly, many make resolutions that are not kept. Perhaps, just perhaps, if we shorten the time of reflection from one year to one month, one week, one day… we might just see the changes we hope to make. Our reflections may become less monumental at the year end, but who needs monuments when we are breaking ground regularly?
Here’s hoping that your Monday, and each day, is as renewing to you as is the start of 2017!
