If you're working today because your (male) boss asked you to cover for him, I want you to know a few things.
First, the pressure you felt to say "yes" to an extra shift- it's not just unique to your situation. It is a global phenomenon.
Gender bias and the pay gap
You were socialized to be agreeable
And outside of work, you are expected to be thin
The double standards
May I suggest something that will help?
To make it through today and many more busy days, I want you to know this:
Everything you do is a choice.
Yes, there are consequences, but I want you always to remember that you don't HAVE to cover for him.
You don't have to give a bonus.
You don't have to spend 20 minutes listening to her vent.
You may decide that you WANT to do it.
That is a beautiful thing, but tell yourself why. Why did you decide to do it? And there is no such thing as "because I had no choice" or "because I had to."
You do NOT have to do anything. Seriously.
Think about it.
Plenty of people are without jobs, cell phones, hot water, or health insurance.
I know you don't want that. You want to come to a warm shower, a bed, and electricity, so you choose to go to work.
That's why you chose to take the shift.

The difference seems slight, but it will make a huge difference in how you feel.
If you had no choice but to take this extra day of work on Friday to cover for the boss, how would you feel?
Trapped.
Stuck.
Powerless.
Now, what if you took the shift because you WANTED to?
You wanted your resume to list a 2-year-long job instead of a 6-month-long gig.
You took the shift because you wanted to make extra money
You took the shift because it is an additional opportunity to practice your skills.
When you think about taking this shift this way, how do you feel?
Better
More in the driver's seat
Stronger
This is my point.
Remember, there is NOTHING in this world that you have to do.
Make a choice.
Like your reason.
Have a beautiful Friday, my friend.
Love,
Zhanna
