Breaking Free of the Nervous Chatter at Networking Events

Breaking Free of the Nervous Chatter at Networking Events

When you're at networking events, do you often find yourself in the cycle of nervous chatter?

If so, you're not alone. Building a thriving business through networking requires more than just exchanging business cards and engaging in small talk. It demands empathy, genuine care, and a willingness to solve problems for others, even if there's nothing in it for you personally.

In a recent interview on my Beyond the Blueprint YouTube channel, I sat down with Trey Vick, the CEO of V3 Capital, who shared invaluable insights for young professionals starting out in the industry. During the conversation, Trey emphasized the transformative power of listening and truly engaging with others. "If you truly listen and engage with people, you'll get to know who they are."

The Transformative Power of Listening

Networking events can be overwhelming, especially for young professionals. The pressure to make a lasting impression, coupled with the fear of rejection, can hinder genuine communication. However, by actively listening and showing empathy, you can set yourself apart from the crowd. Instead of focusing on what you can gain from a connection, focus on understanding the challenges and problems others are facing. Put some thought into how you can help them overcome these obstacles, regardless of whether it directly benefits you or not.

Solving Problems as an Entrepreneur

At its core, entrepreneurship is all about solving problems. The same applies to relationship building. By genuinely caring about others and providing solutions to their challenges, you establish a deeper connection that goes beyond a mere exchange of contact information.

Creating Lasting Connections

When you connect people with one another, fostering a sense of camaraderie, you build a diverse network.

When I was first starting out in the commercial real estate industry, I would go to events and connect the dots. If I was talking to someone who needed a framer for a project then I would connect them with a framer in my network who I knew provided excellent service.

This is an easy way to provide value early on in your career. This works no matter what industry you're in.

Diversify Your Networking Experience

A transformative networking journey extends beyond just professional connections. Spend time engaging in activities within your community that are not directly related to your industry. By doing so, you open doors to a broader spectrum of connections and enrich your network with diverse perspectives.

“If you're only at cocktail parties for real estate, then your network will be pigeonholed to that," Trey said in our interview. Diversification leads to expansion and offers fresh opportunities for growth.
