Breaking Free From Childhood Programming
Recently, I saw an episode of Joe Rogan’s Podcast where he interviewed Dr. Phil about the “cash me outside girlâ€.
A troubled teen who went with her mom onto Dr. Phil’s talk show, to get help with out-of-control behavior.
The teen got sassy on the show with someone in the audience and made a posture to fight, saying “Cash me outside!â€
Well, it got her a lot of publicity and she loved the attention.
So Dr. Phil recommended to send her to a behavior program at a ranch for teens to become a better person.
She had an incredible turnaround after 6 months of being there.
She even became a positive leader for other teens.
They were so impressed, not having been sure if she could do it.
The success was short-lived though — the very first day she went home to her mother, she was right back to her old behavior.
The story says, the mom got worked up over negative comments on social media and pulled the teen into the drama.
Why did this fail?
Because that teen was a product of her environment.
She only changed when in a different environment.
And going back to the same environment means going back to the same ways.
The truth is, a teen doesn’t have enough insight, control, or skills to lead positive change with her mother.
Not to mention, it’s inappropriate and the parent is to be the leader.
At first, I felt surprised Dr. Phil didn’t expect this happening.
Or that he didn’t include the mother in the treatment.
But he’s not a family therapist, so I’m actually not surprised.
Here’s the bottom line:
The whole system needs to change for the individuals to be healthy and thrive.
That’s why mastering your mindset isn’t about one individual person’s mind.
It also includes overcoming family dysfunctional patterns that live within the individual.
So a new system can emerge that supports the growth.
