Breaking Free from the CAO Points Race: LOETB Empowers Learners with Alternative Education Pathways
Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board
Excellence in Education and Training
Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) is delighted to be part of a nationwide campaign to promote the importance of post-secondary education.
There are lots of options available to school leavers and College Awareness Week (CAW) encourages people of all ages to consider further education as part of their future. CAW aims to inspire and inform all students in Ireland about the importance of having a post-secondary education plan. It advocates for students to have the choice to pursue the course best suited to their interests, abilities, and dreams, whether that is a PLC qualification, an apprenticeship or a university degree.
As proud participants in this nationwide campaign, we celebrate the potential of each student and encourage them to consider further education and training (FET) and apprenticeship programmes with Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB).
LOETB offers a comprehensive range of programmes, designed to cater to the varied interests and career aspirations of its students. Many courses are delivered on a full-time and part-time basis, accommodating the diverse needs and schedules of learners. This flexibility ensures that individuals can pursue education without compromising on other commitments, making it accessible to all students.
For those seeking direct entry into the workforce, LOETB's courses are structured to equip learners with the practical skills and knowledge needed in today's competitive job market.
Apprenticeships are gaining widespread popularity among school leavers, with over 70 apprenticeship to choose from, there's something for everyone. LOETB Apprenticeship Services support employers and apprentices throughout their apprenticeship training. An apprenticeship is a dual system, a blended combination of on-the-job employer-based training and off-the-job training. Apprentices earn while they learn and build valuable work-ready skills in a chosen occupation. Apprenticeships open up exciting and rewarding careers.
For those looking to further their academic journey, LOETB's courses serve as a pathway to university education. The knowledge and skills acquired during their time with LOETB empower learners to pursue higher education, opening doors to broader career opportunities.
LOETB has recently partnered with South East Technological University (SETU) to increase access to degree courses in business and software development for learners. This will enable learners to complete a significant element of their undergraduate studies closer to home. This will eradicate some of the most common barriers to participation in higher education – such as cost of accommodation, travel, and CAO entry points. For learners in Laois and surrounding areas, this arrangement means that Portlaoise Institute will be delivering SETU’s Higher Certificate in Computing, and Higher Certificate in Business, in Portlaoise over two years, with successful graduates progressing to their third year of a four-year degree programme in SETU (Carlow Campus).
LOETB is committed to providing comprehensive, flexible, and practical education. Whether students are aiming for immediate employment, progression to the next stage of their course, or a pathway to university, LOETB offers excellence through education and training.
