Youtube Vision For 2023
The new CEO of YouTube, Neal Mohan, shared his vision for the future of YouTube, including creator monetization, more creative tools, generative AI, podcasts, and lots of other interesting developments.?
Creator Monetization
Neal wants to expand creator monetization beyond ads by investing in subscriptions, shopping, and paid digital goods. He didn’t mention any specific plans for monetization, but YouTube has already released new monetization options like Shorts ad-rev share and is testing others such as shoppable videos and direct course sales.
Incorporating AI Tools
YouTube is developing AI tools to enhance creator storytelling and production value, such as virtual outfit swapping and AI-generated film settings, with thoughtful safeguards to ensure responsible use.
Podcast Functionality
YouTube is improving its podcast functionality with new features in YouTube Studio and plans to bring audio and video-first podcasts to YouTube Music users in the US and other regions. RSS integration will also offer another option for podcasters to upload their shows to YouTube.
NFTs Were Not Mentioned
Last year Mohan said YouTube believes new technologies like blockchain and NFTs can allow creators to build deeper relationships with their fans. This year there was no mention of NFTs. However, Mohan did say they are looking to improve their paid digital goods offerings. That could be a way to say NFT, without saying NFT.

Youtube Opens Up Videos To The World
YouTube is now making it easier for creators to add multiple language tracks to their videos. This move is in line with Nuseir Yassin's (Daily Nas) advocacy for creators to embrace other languages to reach a wider audience. Jimmy Donaldson's (Mr. Beast) company has been a leader in this area, but now creators no longer need to create separate channels to cater to different languages. This move is expected to benefit both creators and viewers alike.
Jellysmack Partners With Roku
Jellysmack has partnered with Roku to introduce two new ad-supported channels to the platform - Hello Inspo and Mysteria. These channels will showcase some of Jellysmack's top creators, such as Brad Mondo and Emmy Cho from Emmymade. The partnership with Roku is an extension of Jellysmack's creator program, offering creators analytics, optimization, distribution, and additional monetization prospects. As a fan of both Brad Mondo and Emmymade, as well as true crime shows, I’m excited about this new development!
Social Media Unhealthy For Teens
New studies show that social media is detrimental to the mental health of teenage girls, with more than half experiencing persistent sadness and hopelessness, and 30% have considered suicide. TikTok has taken a step towards addressing this issue by introducing a 60-minute limit for teens automatically, although it may be easy to circumvent. While restrictions may be easy to overcome, it's a start towards improving the well-being of young social media users.
Electrify Video Partners - $50 Million To Invest In Youtube Channels
Electrify Video Partners just raised $50 million to invest in and acquire more YouTube channels. The firm takes a 50% stake in channels in exchange for investment, but will also consider outright ownership. Electrify currently has investments in popular channels such as Astrum, SpitBrix, and Fizzy. Congrats to CEO Ian Shepherd , and we can't wait to see which channels they add to their portfolio next!
Ai-Created Images Cannot Be Copyrighted
According to Eric Farber , founder of CreatorsLegal , AI-created images cannot be copyrighted, which has significant ramifications for creators, especially as AI continues to expand into chat results, video, 3D models, and other areas. While it remains unclear how much customization would be needed to protect a GenAI creation, Farber notes that the copyright act has not been updated to cover our world today. This highlights the need for more comprehensive regulation of AI and copyright laws to ensure fair protection for creators.
