Breaking Down the Display Battle: IPS LCD vs. TN LCD - Everything You Need to Know

IPS LCD and TN LCD are two types of LCD (liquid crystal display) screens that are commonly used in electronic devices such as televisions, computer monitors, and smartphones. While both technologies use liquid crystals to display images, they differ in their construction and performance.

What is TN?

TN (twisted nematic) LCD screens are the older of the two technologies, and they are known for their fast refresh rates and low response times. However, TN screens have relatively narrow viewing angles and limited color accuracy, which can lead to distorted images when viewed from off-center angles. TN screens are also prone to color shifting, where the colors of the screen change when viewed from different angles.

What is IPS?

IPS (in-plane switching) LCD screens were developed as an alternative to TN screens, and they are known for their wide viewing angles and accurate color reproduction. IPS screens use a different type of liquid crystal alignment than TN screens, which allows them to display more colors and produce more accurate images. IPS screens also have faster response times than they used to, although they still tend to be slightly slower than TN screens. However, IPS screens can be more expensive than TN screens.

When comparing IPS and TN screens, it's important to consider the intended use of the screen.

  • For tasks that require color accuracy and wide viewing angles, such as photo and video editing or graphic design, an IPS screen may be the better choice.
  • For tasks that require fast response times and high refresh rates, such as gaming or sports viewing, a TN screen may be a better fit.
