Breaking Down Barriers: Virtual Decisions, RECONNECT, and the Path to Reintegration

The transition from prison life back into the community is a complex and challenging journey, often marked by high rates of reoffending and mortality. To address these pressing issues, a radical shift in approach is urgently needed. Virtual Decisions, in partnership with the Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust and the RECONNECT team, is at the forefront of this change.

Our new Virtual Reality film, produced in collaboration with RECONNECT, offers a powerful firsthand account of the challenges faced by those transitioning from prison. It underscores the vital importance of "pre-release plans for those leaving custody", which the new Labour Government have included within their manifesto. There is a vital need to connect prison leavers with essential support services. By providing a virtual environment for practising real-world scenarios, Virtual Decisions aims to equip individuals with the confidence and skills necessary to successfully reintegrate into society. The award-winning Virtual Decisions format allows users to see the consequences of their actions safely and try the experience again and again, each time with a different outcome depending on their choices.

Initiatives like RECONNECT exemplify the potential of early intervention and collaborative support. By working closely with prison leavers and connecting them with essential services, MPFT’s RECONNECT demonstrates the positive impact of a coordinated approach.?

Our film, Virtual_Decisions:? RECONNECT and accompanying resources offer valuable insights into the challenges faced by prison leavers and the potential of VR technology to address these issues. By actively taking part in the film and exploring their own path, participants can gain a deeper understanding of the critical issues and obstacles they might face upon release.

Being prepared for release, having someone to meet them at the gate, knowing how to utilise their travel warrant, being able to reach out to the RECONNECT team if they need a listening ear as they navigate their day, and understanding the support and opportunities available to them, it is much more likely that prison leavers will succeed in reintegrating into their life beyond custody.?
