Breaking Down Affordability Barriers in Heart Health

When I tell people that I work at GoodRx, they often speak of their own experiences with outrageous medication prices. Many of these stories involve heart medication.?

This isn’t surprising when you consider the stats. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S. Almost half of U.S. adults have some form of cardiovascular disease.?

The data gets even more alarming when you consider racial and ethnic minorities – particularly Black Americans. More than 16 million Black Americans live in cardiology desert counties. They’re lucky to access any specialized care at all.??

There are many reasons why people don’t take their medications, but cost shouldn’t be one. A lot of people who have a heart condition need to be on multiple medications, which can add up really fast. A few years ago, the American Heart Association reported that 1-in-8 Americans couldn’t afford their heart disease medications.?

I refuse to accept this reality.

GoodRx is now offering significant savings on 30 of the most common heart health medications. You’ll pay less than $30 at over 70,000 pharmacies nationwide, and many drugs can be found for less than $15 at popular pharmacies. This includes savings on both generic and brand-name drugs. Most importantly, these savings are available to everyone— insured or not.?

The hope is that with more accessible medication pricing, people can become healthier, live longer and reduce? the stress of financial challenges. This in turn reduces the strain on overworked healthcare professionals and an overburdened healthcare system.???

In my last post , I talked about The GoodRx Effect . We found that GoodRx has directly contributed to the prevention of at least 140,000 ER visits and 110,000 hospitalizations due to major cardiovascular events. In 2023 alone, more than four million Americans saved nearly $1.5 billion on cardiovascular medications with GoodRx. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.?

Medical researchers and cardiologists have made it their mission to improve our collective heart health. By continuing to make advancements in medicine and—more importantly—making sure these treatments are both affordable and accessible, we can work toward a future where everybody with heart disease can get the care they need.
