Breaking Down the 3 B's of Conference Success: Insights from BYU-Hawaii's Asia-Pacific Career Conference

This past week, I had the opportunity to attend the Asia-Pacific Career Conference at BYU-Hawaii, where I met successful entrepreneurs and companies from various fields. As a way to summarize a few of my takeaways from the conference, I coined the 3 B's you need to know to conquer APCC: Be prepared, Be open-minded, and Be diligent.

Be Prepared

Failure to plan is a plan to fail. Something that helped me feel more confident was attending the Tuesday afternoon networking event prior to the main career fair on Wednesday, as well as doing my research on the companies and speakers that were going to attend. Also, completing the certification course curated by the university helped me to practice introductions, polish my resume, and learn insights on making more meaningful connections and conversations.

Be Open-minded

During the conference, I was able to attend a few information sessions that were not in my usual field, but I ended up learning so much from them. You never know what opportunities might come your way at a conference, so it's essential to keep an open mind and explore new possibilities.

Be Diligent

Lastly, being diligent is the final key to success. Follow up with the people you met, whether it's connecting on LinkedIn, sending a thank you message, or scheduling a follow-up call or meeting. This shows your interest and dedication, and it could lead to potential job opportunities in the future.

Overall, attending the Asia-Pacific Career Conference was an amazing experience that helped me advance my career journey, grow my network, and step outside of my comfort zone.

A special thanks to Brigham Young University–Hawaii, Keni Kalama, Ann Springer , and all others who had a hand in helping me and working so hard to organize this conference for our students!
