If you're reading this, chances are you're interested in transitioning into the exciting world of digital marketing. It's a fast-paced industry that is constantly evolving, and as such, requires a willingness to learn and adapt. I recommend a 12-week learning plan, at least 10 hours a week and about 2 hours a day dedicated to understanding the world you are about to enter and the challenges/opportunities they bring.
First things first, let's start with the basics. Spend the first 3 weeks to research the fundamentals of digital marketing, digital audience engagement, while exploring the principles of media buying and running paid promotions on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Google Ads, and LinkedIn. Don't know where to start? Try joining a group of fellow digital marketers to learn from each other and share resources. Reach out to some who have been doing it much longer including Esinam Batali , Edward Asare , Samuel Kwabena Ansong , Elizabeth Tay , Stephen Naasei Boadi , Edward Koomson for advice or answers to certain questions you may have.
Once you've got the basics down, it's time to get your hands dirty. Take advantage of online courses, tutorials, and workshops to build your knowledge and gain practical skills. For example, the Google Ads certification program offers free online courses on media buying and running paid promotions on Google Ads. HubSpot offers free courses on content marketing, social media marketing, and inbound marketing. The Facebook Blueprint program offers courses on running paid promotions on Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms. The journey you have decided to embark on is a lonely and adventurous one filled with many lessons, brace yourself.
Now, let's talk about social media. It's a crucial aspect of digital marketing, and it's constantly evolving. Research the latest trends and strategies in social media marketing, and create social media accounts for yourself or a business to start experimenting. Don't be afraid to get creative with your content - try new formats like reels or stories to see what resonates with your audience. Get some pages with which you can practice
Content marketing is another key component of digital marketing. Develop a content marketing strategy for a business or yourself, and hone your writing and content creation skills for digital channels. Remember, the key to success in content marketing is providing value to your audience. Use tools like Google Trends or BuzzSumo to find trending topics in your industry, and create content that answers your audience's questions.
To really excel in digital marketing, you need to understand media buying and running paid promotions on digital channels. Research the principles of media buying, and optimize campaigns for a business or client. Try experimenting with different targeting options and ad formats to find what works best for your campaign.
Finally, it's time to measure success. Use analytics tools to analyze data and improve your digital marketing campaigns. Build your data analysis and interpretation skills, and learn to effectively communicate your results to clients or stakeholders. Remember, the key to success in digital marketing is continuous improvement and adaptation based on data insights.
Enter the industry seamlessly by following this 12-week plan I deviced below.
Week 1-2: Learn the Basics of Digital Marketing
Week 3-4: Develop Your Digital Marketing Skills and Identify interest areas
Week 5-6: Explore Different Digital Marketing Channels
Week 7-8: Create Your First Campaign
Week 9-10: Analyze and Optimize Your Campaign
Week 11-12: Refine Your Strategy
This plan is designed to help you develop a solid foundation in digital marketing over 12 weeks.
I understand that mastering digital marketing can be challenging, but don't let that discourage you. Remember that even the most successful digital marketers were once novices who had to start somewhere. So, stay curious, be creative, and don't be afraid to experiment with new strategies.
In the words of John Wanamaker, "Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half." With this in mind, be encouraged to keep pushing forward, take risks, and stay innovative in your approach to digital marketing. We wish you all the best on your journey to becoming a digital marketing pro!
