Breaking the Chains of Too Little
The Gift of Generosity
If everything’s really connected, it must make a great deal of sense to put as much positive energy out into the world as possible. But the act of giving resonates more deeply than a simple act of kindness or generosity. It’s a powerful reinforcement in the belief that there really is more than enough for everyone.
Let’s think about this for a moment. Greed and selfishness are often based on an assumption that there is never enough in the world. Greed is an extension of the fear-based mindset that we all have to compete with tooth and claw and grab as much as we can to prevent anyone else from taking our share of the spoils. We see this every day in people’s individual behaviour. We also witness it on the international stage in the way that nations compete for resources.
Clearly, this leads to an extremely dysfunctional way to live one’s life. And it’s been the justification for some of the most barbaric acts in human history. But there are some interesting alternative views to consider.
True generosity is an offering, given freely and out of pure love. No strings attached. No expectations. Time and love are the most valuable possession you can share.
- Suze Orman
The opposite view prefers to consider the universe as a place of abundance, an environment that provides more than enough for everyone. Rather than seeing this as a purely fanciful way of interpreting the world, this positive mindset exercises a profound influence on our subconscious conditioning. We’re far more likely to expect positive results, success and the fulfilment of our dreams if we believe in an unimaginably vast amount of wealth and opportunity in the world. And, when you consider how much money’s flowing around the world today, it’s startlingly obvious that there really is no shortage of cash!
In fact, it’s completely impossible to imagine how much money really exists. The quantities are simply too enormous to be grasped by the limits of the human imagination. Yet most people behave as if there’s a chronic, constant shortage of cash. This leads to an element of fear in most financial transactions. And when we harbour negative associations with any commodity, we will do our best to keep it as far from our daily experience as possible. How ironic is that? We obsess about financial security whilst demonising money and yet we still expect that we can achieve a harmonious and satisfying relationship with cash!
Be a warrior when it comes to delivering on your ambitions. And a saint when it comes to treating people with respect, modeling generosity, and showing up with outright love.
Robin - S. Sharma
Learning to be at peace with money can produce extraordinary and unexpected shifts in our circumstances. It’s amazing that so many people have an inner notion of their earning capacity and will resist quite strongly any opportunity to earn beyond that self-imposed limit. Surprising - but true. Breaking out of that particular comfort zone and imposing a dramatically increased value on your earning potential can also produce very positive results in your career.
There are many benefits associated with giving. Cultivating a spirit of generosity can also help to offset those stubborn, old fears associated with money. By giving, you develop the confidence that you can easily replace whatever you might donate. There’s no virtue, however, in handing over everything and then wondering how you’re going to eat! Yet it’s a very positive trait to cultivate.
It also encourages us to give without judging whether someone is worthy of our generosity. That in itself is a new way of encountering the world, a way to widen our perspective and experience life beyond the filtering lens of our conditioned reflexes and instant judgements.
Real generosity is doing something nice for someone who will never find out.
- Frank A. Clark
And there’s an obvious question that follows from these suggestions. Is giving supposed to be completely selfless? Well, that might be expecting too much! In giving, we receive many benefits in return. But let us welcome participation in a virtuous cycle that benefits all who are involved. What better way to make the world a better place for everyone – including ourselves.
Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.
- Albert Camus
