Life can change in an instant, and for me, that moment came with the sudden and devastating loss of my hearing. It felt like the ground was ripped out from under me. In one swift stroke, I lost not only a fundamental sense but also the sense of direction that had defined my life for so long. What started as a physical ailment became a profound metaphor for a deeper emotional breakdown—one that forced me to confront long-buried feelings of failure, inadequacy, and worthlessness. It was as if losing my ability to hear also stripped me of the identity I had carefully constructed through years of hard work and external validation. But what felt like an ending was, in fact, a beginning—a journey of self-discovery that transformed my life.
As I grappled with this life-altering event, I found myself reflecting on my past, my habits, and the stories I had told myself. It became clear that much of my suffering was rooted not just in the loss of hearing, but in a deeper psychological struggle—a lifelong dependence on external approval. I had spent years striving to be perfect, to be recognized for my accomplishments, but when the applause stopped and the silence set in, I was left alone with my thoughts, forced to confront the truth. My worth had become tied to what others thought of me, and without their validation, I felt like nothing.
In this painful introspection, I reconnected with my younger self—the part of me that had learned early on to chase achievement over emotional fulfillment. Growing up, I was praised for what I did, not for who I was. My parents, like many others, valued success over emotional validation, and without realizing it, I had carried that belief into my adult life. I was chasing approval, constantly seeking validation from others because deep down, I didn’t believe I was enough on my own. This realization was heartbreaking, yet liberating. It was a painful truth I needed to face in order to heal.
I began to understand that seeking validation from others was not only dangerous but also destructive. It was a trap that left me feeling empty, no matter how much I achieved. I learned that true self-worth can never come from the outside. It must be cultivated from within. The journey to self-compassion and empowerment was not easy—it required me to look at the parts of myself I had long ignored, to sit with the discomfort of my own emotions, and to slowly build a sense of worth that wasn’t dependent on anyone else's opinions. I realized that I had to give myself the love, compassion, and validation I had been seeking all along.
One of the most pivotal moments in my journey came when I fully embraced the idea of self-compassion. For so long, I had been my harshest critic, punishing myself for every perceived failure and inadequacy. But losing my hearing—and the life I had built around my identity as an achiever—gave me no choice but to let go of these old patterns. I began to understand that it was okay to be imperfect, to make mistakes, and to ask for help. More importantly, I realized that my worth wasn’t tied to my productivity or success, but to my inherent humanity. This shift in perspective was life-changing.
In reconnecting with my younger self and examining the emotional wounds of my past, I also learned an important lesson about empathy—not just for myself, but for others. I had spent years resenting people for not recognizing my hard work, for not giving me the validation I so desperately craved. But now I understand that no one can meet all of our emotional needs, no matter how much we may want them to. It’s our responsibility to meet ourselves with empathy, to fill those emotional gaps from within. The more I practiced self-empathy, the more I realized how freeing it was to no longer rely on others for my sense of self-worth.
Today, I stand before you as someone who has reclaimed her power—not by achieving more, but by letting go of the need to prove myself. I’ve learned that true validation must come from within, and that we are all worthy, regardless of what we do or don’t accomplish. I encourage you to reflect on your own life. Are you allowing others’ opinions to dictate your self-worth? Are you chasing approval, hoping it will make you feel whole? The truth is, nothing external can fill that void. The power to affirm your worth has always been within you. Don’t be afraid to embrace it. You are enough just as you are.
