Have you ever wondered why restaurants serve bread while you are waiting for your food???
Some believe it is a sign of hospitality! Isn't it so nice that they serve that warm beautiful loaf right out of the oven with that creamy butter!??And, isn't it great to break bread with friends and family?
Others theorize that filling diners up on bread before the main course of meat, fish, or other more expensive foods helped keep expenses down for the restaurant.
Or,?it’s a way to give diners something to do before their food arrives. There's nothing worse for the restaurant than a hungry diner waiting for food while watching other tables enjoy their food. So, giving them a little bread and butter to tide them over keeps them happy and prevents them from becoming impatient. We call that hangry (hungry + angry=hangry).
While these explanations seem quite plausible and nice, the body's response isn't so nice? Here's the real deal!?
Not only are you eating more calories with little nutritional value, studies also show that eating all those carbs before a meal can amp up our appetite. And, what do we do when our appetite is amped up?? You guessed it! We actually order more and eat more! ?
Also, eating bread, a refined carbohydrate,?on an empty stomach quickly turns the bread into a sugar in the digestive process which spikes the blood sugar levels and then insulin levels to return the blood sugar to normal levels.
So while the intent to provide an impression of hospitality, fill you up to save on restaurant expenses or to keep you happy while waiting seem nice on the surface, the bread basket truly has a?negative effect on your health! So, you may want to pass on it the next time you dine out!?
