Breaking Barriers: Women Entrepreneurs and Access to Credit

Women entrepreneurs in India are emerging as dynamic forces of economic growth, transforming industries with their innovation, resilience, and leadership. Yet, access to credit remains a significant barrier, particularly in underserved regions. For many women-led businesses, securing the financing needed to scale their ventures can be challenging, limiting their potential and impact.

Access to credit is not just a financial service; it’s a catalyst for growth, independence, and long-term prosperity. When women gain access to funds, they create jobs, stimulate local economies, and uplift entire communities. The ripple effect extends to improved education, healthcare, and overall societal well-being, contributing to a brighter future for all.

Recent reports indicate that 47% of women entrepreneurs in India's micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) face significant difficulties accessing financial credit. This is further compounded by a gender gap in credit usage—women in India receive loans equivalent to only 27% of the deposits they contribute, compared to 52% for men. While barriers persist, several government initiatives have provided critical support, helping women entrepreneurs gain better access to credit.

Under Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana, which extends micro-credit for entrepreneurship, nearly 70 percent of beneficiaries are female, and 84 percent of loans sanctioned under Start-Up India have also gone to female beneficiaries. These initiatives have played a key role in enabling women-led businesses to thrive and grow.

At Capri Global, we believe that empowering women entrepreneurs is essential for inclusive development. In FY 2023-24 alone, we supported over 50,000 women entrepreneurs, and we aim to reach 200,000 more in the next five years. Our approach combines financial literacy and entrepreneurship training, helping women manage their finances wisely and build sustainable businesses.

One inspiring example is Monika Chauhan, leader of the “Harshita” Self-Help Group in Ujjain. Despite limited education, Monika transitioned from household duties to running a successful saree shop, thanks to her connection with the Women's Empowerment Network and the Kala Maitri brand. Today, she’s a community role model.

Our mission at Capri Global is to break down the financial barriers hindering women entrepreneurs. By offering tailored products with flexible terms, quick disbursement, and personalized support, we’re enabling thousands of women to thrive.

As an industry, we must continue advocating for policies that enhance credit access for women. At Capri Global, we’re committed to being part of the solution, ensuring women have the financial tools to succeed and contribute meaningfully to the economy. Breaking barriers begins with providing opportunities—and the future of India’s women entrepreneurs is full of potential waiting to be unlocked.
