Breaking barriers: Lucy on becoming a Sales Team Lead

In love with endurance sports from early childhood, Lucy Hunt knows that hard work and dedication pay off. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on sports management and gained valuable experience as a working student alongside her studies. She started her career in Madrid before we? convinced her to join the Moss journey.?

From her very first day at Moss, Lucy has been dedicated to making an impact. Just a? year later her dedication paid off as she was asked to take on the responsibility of? Team Lead for one of our Account Executive teams. Let’s get a deeper insight into Lucy’s growth story at Moss.

You studied sports management - What made you focus on sales instead?

I have always been into sports, mostly running and cycling. Initially, I wanted to work in the sports industry but thought? it might be smarter to separate the two worlds so I wouldn’t? risk? losing my passion. So, I decided to study business management.

While I was studying, I had my first experience in sales as a working student and? I fell in love with it. I really enjoy interacting with people and solving their problems.?

So, I decided to start a career in sales as well. Actually, I like to balance the mentally demanding work with physical exercise. The morning run in the park sparks a lot of creativity and inspiration for me. I treat it as part of my work day - so I did combine the two worlds after all.

Why Moss? Could you describe your journey so far??

My entry in the finance industry was as a sales representative for a credit card provider. Being in close contact with my clients helped me understand the challenges they were facing. It was clear that having a? credit card alone was not enough, there was a need for a tool to manage associated spending.? When I heard about Moss, it struck me that Moss solves exactly the problems my former clients reported having — managing expenses. It wasn’t just about? offering a credit card for your employees, but adding value to each credit card. This got me very excited. Knowing there was a growing demand for an all-in-one spend management solution in the market, I saw the potential of Moss becoming a FinTech market leader right away. And I wanted to be part of that journey.

When I joined Moss there were just 15 colleagues in sales. Now we are about 140 - and we are hiring! It is exhilarating to be part of the Moss universe that keeps growing.

What do you love most about your job at Moss?

I love two things: the product itself and the people at Moss.?

There’s a common conception that working in sales can feel like Shark Tank. I have never experienced that at Moss. I think it’s a great accomplishment for any company to be able to create a culture that enables teams to work together in an environment where everyone is assessed individually. We collaborate, share knowledge, best practices, and tips, within and across departments.

For instance, we have demos on Fridays where departments share what they are working on and weekly Moss academy sessions to share and extend our knowledge on sales-specific topics, be it product, competitor, or accounting related.

I have been dedicated to my job and my contribution to Moss’ success from day one. Within my first year I was promoted to lead a team of seven Account Executives,? focusing on startups, small and medium sized enterprises. I love that hard work and good results are seen and recognized within Moss. Everyone is given an equal opportunity to demonstrate their strengths and add value. It’s a great environment to work and grow in.?

When it comes to the product, it’s fun to sell a solution that solves real problems. I don’t have to convince people to buy something. The product solves real problems and the clients can see that right away. We get to work with so many different clients across exciting industries and it’s really satisfying being able to provide support and grow with them

What were your main learnings so far? What advice would you give someone?looking to join Moss?

This might sound a bit cheesy but I do find it to be true: there’s a great similarity between my sales job at Moss and endurance sports. Always keep at it. Show endurance, willpower and perseverance. Every day. Your efforts will be recognised?and you will be successful.

As a woman in sales, don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and have the confidence to share your ideas. In many situations, it's your unique viewpoint that could add a whole new perspective.

The current market situation makes the next few months very exciting. It definitely helps to be flexible and open to change. There’s never a dull moment.? Especially with the new features releasing soon.?
