Breaking Barriers: How Leaders Move Beyond Self-Imposed Descriptors

Breaking Barriers: How Leaders Move Beyond Self-Imposed Descriptors

Have you ever felt trapped by the labels others have placed on you—or worse, the labels you’ve placed on yourself? As leaders, we’re often told that "perception is reality." While this is partially true, the real challenge lies in shaping that perception into something empowering rather than limiting.?

Today, I want to share the story of a client, Jeremy, whose transformation reveals how to move beyond self-imposed descriptors and embrace a leadership mindset that transcends obstacles.

1. Reframe Your Reality

  • Identify one belief or label that’s holding you back. Write it down and analyze its source.
  • Ask yourself: Is this belief rooted in fact, or is it a story I’ve created based on past experiences?

For Jeremy, his labels—a gay, Latino man who grew up in poverty—became barriers because he let them define his potential. Reframing reality starts with acknowledging obstacles without living in them. Leaders who succeed don’t ignore challenges; they choose not to be defined by them.

2. Focus on Who You Want to Be, Not Where You’ve Been

  • Write down your dream role or achievement.
  • Describe it in terms of what you can offer—your skills, values, and vision—instead of the obstacles you’ve faced.

When I asked Jeremy who he wanted to be, he couldn’t articulate it without reverting to his obstacles. Shifting focus to who you want to be allows you to create a new narrative, one that propels you forward.

3. Challenge the Story That Keeps You Stuck

  • Identify one painful story from your past. Write down the details, then examine it with curiosity.
  • Ask: Who were the people in this story, and what was their own reality? How might their actions have been shaped by their circumstances?

Jeremy’s breakthrough came when he revisited a story about high school bullies. By reframing their actions as a reflection of their insecurities rather than his worth, he took control of the narrative.

4. Seek Out Proof of Possibility

  • Research success stories of individuals who overcame obstacles similar to yours.
  • Reflect on what these stories teach you about resilience and possibility.

Your perception shapes your reality, but it doesn’t have to limit it. Leaders who rise above self-imposed descriptors understand that while obstacles are real, they are not insurmountable.?

By reframing your reality, focusing on your aspirations, and rewriting limiting narratives, you can break through barriers and achieve greatness.

Let’s start building your winning leadership mindset today!

Have a WINNING day!
