Biting flies on dairy farms can spread bovine mastitis

Bovine mastitis is one of the most significant diseases in dairy herds worldwide due to its economic impact. The USDA reports cases in 99.7% of U.S. dairy operations, making it the most prevalent dairy farm disease. Pathogenic bacteria and microbes cause mastitis, but the role of flies in its transmission was unclear.

A study in mSphere, by the American Society for Microbiology, has now identified stable flies (Stomoxys) as carriers of the bacteria causing bovine mastitis. Researchers at the 美国威斯康星大学麦迪逊分校 sequenced microbial communities from these flies at two connected dairy farms and found the same bacterial taxa associated with mastitis in both fly and manure samples.

Research led by Irving Coy Allen in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine has unlocked a pathway to possible future treatments for colorectal cancer in humans.

A paper published in May in the American Gastroenterological Association journalCellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology focuses on NF-kB-inducing kinase (NIK) and its importance in triggering cellular responses that reduce the risk of the development of colorectal cancer.

UC Davis Selects BluePrints Veterinary Marketing Group as Agency for Veterinary Medical Center Southern California

Animal health consultancy BluePrints Veterinary Marketing Group, Inc. , has been named as the Agency of Record for the new San Diego-based Janice K. Hobbs UC Davis Veterinary Medical Center Southern California.

With an opening date set for late 2025, the new 23,000-square-foot veterinary medical center, located at 5040 Shoreham Place in San Diego, will allow the university to greatly expand its current Southern California-based services.
