"Breaking Barriers"
Recently, Iowa State University dedicated this beautiful 200,000 pound concrete sculpture produced by American Artstone as a tribute to their first black student athlete, Jack Trice. A member of the Cyclone Football team and Animal Husbandry major, Trice tragically passed away from injuries he sustained during his second collegiate football game on October 8, 1923 at the age of 21.
Ivan Toth Depe?a, who was commissioned to design this statue entitled “Breaking Barriers” to commemorate Trice passing 100 years later, said that the work captured density, fluidity, struggle and success. He also noted that this was the largest installation he has made to date.
Our own Technical Director, Todd Jones, was consulted by American Artstone to safely install this archway outside the Jack Trice Stadium. The challenges presented by this project were selecting the appropriate lift anchors, determining the proper lift anchor orientation and calculating the center of gravity. Jones was able to give guidance on the aforementioned concerns and suggested ALP’s 12.5 Ton Y Erection Anchor to safely lift and rotate this installation into place.
It is great to have a resource like you, as we would have never thought to rotate those lifters in that orientation.?- Jeff Plaats

2 年ALP is there again with solving problems when aesthetics is a critical piece in how the precast is handled. I have always preferred using the ring clutch with the endless loop over the shackle. It allows for a smoother transition in rotating the piece. The shackles can fetch up with the hook and twist. This artist clearly scored a touchdown with the faculty at Iowa State University. What a beautiful tribute to this player.

2 年Kudos to the artist Ivan Toth Depe?a on the design, Precaster American Artstone on the execution and our very own Director of Technical Services Todd Jones for assistance on how to safely lift and handle the enormous pieces of this project. To see such a creative design done in precast is awesome.??
