Do you let your habits run your life?
Are you in control of when you put that habit into action?
Let’s talk about it!
Many of our daily actions involve “habits” like brushing teeth, taking a shower, or doing other typical daily chores.
Most of these habits are on autopilot.
You learned very early on how to brush your teeth, and with years of repetition, it became a well-established habit.
Well, some of our habits may not be so beneficial. It’s as if “they” happen to us… like how I used to walk zombie-like into the cabinet for Reese’s Peanut butter cups and devour a bag without blinking!!?
Have you ever felt some of your habits take over your life??
You’re driving, and before you know it, you’re ordering a pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks. Or you’ve been scrolling Instagram and eventually look up to see that 4 hours have passed??
I get it, and you’re not alone. We all have these automatic habits triggering us throughout the day, and as you can see, some are healthy, and some are not.?
The great news is that you can create new habits to feel healthy, happy, and more in control throughout your days.
One key piece is to start by making sure you want to change. Sometimes, we fear change.?
When we get discouraged, we prevent ourselves from making changes. It’s easy to be afraid of the unknown. It’s easy to convince us that these changes will be difficult or impossible.?
Could this be why you haven’t made significant behavior changes?
“We are what we repeatedly do; excellence is not an act but a habit.”
I want you to know that making changes doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s not impossible, and it all starts with the right mindset. Once you tap into and claim your desire to change your behavior and begin following healthier habits, it all begins to flow more effortlessly.
You will probably struggle with actually working toward these new and healthy habits. This isn’t to discourage you but to help you see the importance of getting into that mindset.?
If you’re not in the right mindset, you’ll find it challenging to focus. That’s where I come in!
Do you have the desire to change your current habits and behaviors? If not, let’s take a moment and try to get there.?

Let’s Brainstorm
First, let’s do some brainstorming about what you want to change.?
Let’s focus on the unhealthy habits you currently have. These habits can be about anything in your life.
Here are a few questions to get you started:
1 – What is something you do that you no longer want to be doing?
2 – What habits aren’t serving you?
3 – In what ways are these habits no longer serving you?
?Self Reflection
I have a few more questions you want to think about. I want you to brainstorm and reflect so you can continue toward healthier habits.
“Change your habits, or your habits will change you.”
1) What habits in your life do you want to change?
2) What else in your life would change if your bad habits changed?
3) What are some new habits that could replace the old ones?
Write it Down
Jotting down your answers will help you focus on creating those better habits and stay motivated to achieve your personalized self-care routine filled with your unique healthy habits.
If you try to change 5 or 10 practices at once, you will be overwhelmed and burnt out. So with my clients, I like to narrow our focus to one habit. This allows you to focus and make that change.?
We don’t want that!

?Final Thoughts
It’s time to let go of the habits that are not serving you and free up time, energy, and money to establish a healthier lifestyle.

2 年Great information Denise Morrison PT, DPT. I would add that if you don't like the results you are getting in an area of your life it would be good to look at your habits in that area. What are your values (what's important to you) in that area of life and what are your strategies (which is one way to look at habits) for trying to accomplish what you want. Once we look objectively at our habits (and overall strategies) it allows us to view them from a place without judgement and we can then adjust them to support us in getting the results we want.
