Breakfast tacos the official breakfast item of the Lone Star State.

AUSTIN, TX (KLTV) - A resolution filed in the Texas House of Representatives would make breakfast tacos the official breakfast item of the Lone Star State.

The resolution, which was filed Thursday in the 85th Legislature, states the taco can feature any ingredients as long as it includes a tortilla and is eaten for breakfast.

House Concurrent Resolution 92, authored by Haltom City republican Stephanie Klick, places breakfast tacos on par with other signature Texas foods such as barbecue and chicken-fried steak.

Across the state, there's still a debate over when and where the first breakfast taco was served. The legislation cites a 1950s newspaper article about a restaurant in San Antonio serving a taco with egg, while another account from the 1850s recalls a California to Texas cattle drive that served bacon on a tortilla.

The staple is a popular addition to the morning menu of countless fast food chains and restaurants, the legislation stated.

"The breakfast taco has become a signature Texas food on a par with barbecue and chicken-fried steak, and it is enjoyed by countless residents of the Lone Star State each morning as the perfect way to start their day."

The resolution has not yet been scheduled for discussion.
