Meet the Barton Legal Team

We're pleased to share that?Bill Barton?will?soon?be travelling to South Korea?and will be in Seoul during the week commencing?9 December 2024.?This visit comes at a particularly interesting time for the Korean construction sector, which has seen significant market shifts over recent years.

While 2009-2012 marked a golden period of international earnings for Korean contractors, the industry has since faced considerable headwinds.?However, the construction market in South Korea remains strong and was valued at a total of $259.9 billion in 2023, according to Global Data. It is expected to continue to grow over the course of the decade, with some estimates predicting compound annual growth of as much as 3.0%. Growth has been driven by an increase in large scale projects with investment into, for instance, energy and road infrastructure. Nevertheless,?several challenges continue to impact the sector:

  • Labour shortages in specialised fields
  • Complex project management issues
  • Overextension in contractual commitments

Though recent surges in orders from Southeast Asia,?the Pacific and North America,?and the Middle East offer promising signs, the current climate appears ripe for construction disputes. Key areas of concern include:

  • Misinterpretation of contractual terms
  • Change order management
  • Project delays
  • Contract inconsistencies

Bill welcomes the opportunity to discuss these trends and the broader Korean disputes landscape during his visit. To schedule a meeting or learn more, please reach out directly to arrange a conversation.
