Two years ago, I began swimming as an exercise. Since as a teen and while growing up I had always enjoyed swimming, I was excited to get back to my favorite sport. My gym's pool had a 25 m lap. What could deter me? I thought. Yet, my first day of swimming turned out to be the most frustrating. I had difficulty completing just one lap. I ended up taking 5-minute breaks before beginning the second and third laps. Worse, after the fourth lap, I found myself completely exhausted. What was happening??
While driving back home, I turned to my usual habit of mind talk. I also tried to analyze the reasons for my early exhaustion. I haven't been swimming regularly. I have lost the practice. A lot of possibilities came to my mind. I was determined to identify the reasons for failure and steps to improve my performance, all this while mind-talking with myself for deeper intrinsic motivation. I decided to read more about swimming, and watched alternative ways to swim such as breast/back stroke.
The next day I felt equipped: I knew the reasons why I couldn't swim well and I had the knowledge to improve. I did a bit of more mind-talk: I told myself what I wanted to achieve. It may sound a little far-fetched now that I am writing it down, but I made a target of eight laps without break. I did it successfully. I slowly began to increase the number of laps. In three weeks, I was able to swim for 40 laps without taking a break. Till today I swim for 40 laps at least four days a week. I had found my sweet spot!?

While this was a small incident of success through some of the habits that I have inculcated over time, this mindset may become the difference between winning and losing on more pressing life matters.
