The feeling of anxiousness, butterflies in the stomach or sweaty hands are all normal symptoms of worrying for something or someone.
It’s usual to worry about things in your life, isn’t it? I also find it quite normal for people to be anxious; however, when the anxious behaviour becomes one’s habit, it causes many internal and external problems. Anxiety till a level feels normal, once that line is crossed you know when you need to step back and think about your lives’ choices.
Being anxious is a choice at first, not a habit which cannot be controlled. Feeling anxious about your school exams, examination results, meeting with the boss or waiting to meet your blind date is usual and common. Anxiety may last for a few seconds or minutes. Anything above that can lead to general health issues. If your life’s everyday chores are interrupted with anxiety, then it is a sign that you need to consider changing your everyday routine and try to stabilize your feelings before seeing a doctor for help.
What Causes Anxiety?
Unfortunately, doctors haven't been able to diagnose the real reason behind anxiety issues in people. Most common cause predicted by doctors is genetics that plays an essential role in anxiety issues. A past incident perhaps can be a trigger for anxiety in people.
Break the Worry Habit
One needs to break the cycle of worry and come out of the loop of anxiety attacks. There are several life hacks that can help you come out of the anxiety that you are prone to. Let’s walk through them one by one.
- Stay Occupied
There are several ways to keep yourself occupied while waiting for perhaps a school examination result, meeting with the boss, or a presentation with a client. One can easily hop on a ride to take a vacation, choose to follow one’s hobby, upskill oneself for higher promotions or dive into social working.
Staying occupied can help you stay distracted. Doctors have predicted that using one’s energy can lower one’s anxiety issues. In short, instead of using all your energy in thinking and procrastination, why not invest it somewhere that will help you stay calm or maybe at peace.
Do you have a hobby or dream that was left behind due to a stressful work environment or exhausting study routine?
- Don’t Fuss About Trifles
The British Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli has very correctly said,â€Life is too short to be little. So let us not major in the minors.â€
When one begins to worry about the smaller things in life, they tend to forget to focus on the big picture. Leaving oneself anxious and full of doubts. If you feel you aren’t able to succeed in small meetings, presentations, exams etc, please don’t worry, what matters is the last result or final outcome.
In life, the final outcome is how you lived your life and will you be enjoying the last 4 or 5 years of your life or not. If you just focus on working hard and smart, you will definitely be a successful human being, both in professional and personal life. However, if you keep worrying about the smallest of failures, you’ll not be able to win in life.
Hence, “The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is more valuable than the rainbows you take to get there.†- Benjamin Disraeli
- Use the Law of Averages to Outlaw your Worries
Sometimes when one is busy in work or daily life chores, one doesn’t realise how mentally exhausted he/she is, whereas, when we sit idle on a weekend, we feel the blisters in our soul, leaving us overwhelmed due to a hectic week, month, or a year.
Worrying about our work, studies, or general life goals is normal, but focusing all your energy on them can be a stressful experience. Hence, Dale Carnegie principle of the law of averages to outlaw your worries comes into the picture.
If you are focusing all your attention on the negative side of the problem, you’ll be overwhelmed with it; however, if you decide to see all the good things in life, you’ll start releasing the stress immediately.
Imagine, after a hectic week at the office, when you wake up in the morning feeling exhausted, you have nearly no positive side to look at. But if you decide to cook, trying your hand on a new recipe, you will feel extremely happy and content. This feeling reduces stress and anxiety, allowing you to take a fresh breath of air.
Hence, looking at the positive things in your life, can reduce the tension caused by the stressful events happening everyday.
What do you say, will it work for you?
- Cooperate With the Inevitable
“When life gives you lemons, add sugar and water to itâ€
When something unlikely happens in life, instead of sitting on the problem and worrying over it, make it a point to let it go and tell yourself, there’s nothing you can do about it.
Important point is to stay positive about the problems in your life. Imagine, your colleague had to present a presentation in front of a client, and he unfortunately screws it up.
What can you do about it? Nothing
Dealing with the problem in a calm and peaceful manner will help you achieve the larger goal, therefore, believe in looking at the future goal and not on the smaller issues you are facing right now.
- Decide How Much Anxiety a Thing May Be Worth and Refuse to Give it More
Here I really want to remind you that not everything is worth worrying about. Smaller problems in life will come and go; if you focus on them, you’ll lose out the time you have in your hands to achieve the bigger goal in life.
It’s almost like a speed breaker you face while traveling on the road, there are going to be many, if you worry about the speed breakers and stop driving, you’ll never reach your destination.
Hence, remind yourself of the goal you are trying to attain, and let go of the worry for the smaller issues.
I hope you agree!
- Don’t Worry About the Past
If you keep living in the past, you’ll never be able to look into the future. Sitting on your past and reminding yourself of the mistakes you have made will make things all the more difficult to clear out.
Think clearly, focus on the bigger picture and remind yourself that little things that come your way aren’t that important.
Do you live in your past?
Conclusion
The stress-free world is a myth. So if you are procrastinating that your life will be a worry-less ride, you are extremely wrong.
Get going and believe in yourself that you will manage everything eventually. There is nothing that can stop you from reaching your final destination.
