Break the self-sabotage cycle!

Is there a gap between what you want and what you need?

We’re often told to chase what we want—dreams, goals, success.

Society cheers us on, “Go after what you want!”

It’s everywhere—in advice from friends, social media, and even in motivational quotes.

But what if chasing our wants while ignoring our needs is a form of self-sabotage that is holding us back?

Have you ever heard of Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs?

It’s a conceptual model that helps us see how human needs are interconnected and build on top of each other.

The base of the pyramid is about meeting our basic needs—things like safety, food, rest, and emotional security.

As we move up, we tackle connection, self-esteem, and eventually, self-actualization (that’s where big dreams and personal growth live, where we achieve our full potential).

But what happens if there’s a gap in the lower levels or if we are building on a wobbly foundation?

If the lower levels aren’t strong enough, anything we build on top will feel shaky.

When we don’t align our wants with our needs, we often end up stuck in a cycle of frustration or even self-sabotage.

For example, if your basic need for rest or emotional support isn’t sustainably met, chasing big dreams will be draining. Or if your need for belonging isn’t addressed, even the biggest success may leave you feeling empty. Here’s the good news: when we slow down to recognize and meet our needs, we set the stage for lasting success.

Alignment happens when what we want works with what we need.

It’s not about giving up your dreams—it’s about building the right support system so they can thrive.


Take a moment today to ask yourself:

  • Are my basic needs met?
  • Am I caring for my mental and emotional well-being?
  • What’s missing in my foundation?
  • How can I take care of that need?
  • Are my wants in harmony with my needs?
  • How can I align what I want with what I truly need?

When your wants and needs align, life feels more balanced.


You can build your dreams on a steady base—and they’ll stand strong.
