Will they? Won’t they. For months, there has been a cloud of uncertainty around regulation breathing down upon big tech in no small measures. Now those streams of whispers are building up to reach a crescendo.
And the question was ringing loud… “Google to be broken into pieces?”
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Tuesday that it is seeking profound changes to Google's business structure, following a federal court ruling that found the company guilty of operating as an illegal monopoly.
US District Judge Amit Mehta ruled in August that Google had established itself as a monopolist by paying billions to secure its position as the default search engine on platforms like Apple's iPhones.
The DOJ’s legal filing proposed several remedies, including the potential divestment of Google’s Android smartphone operating system and Chrome browser. The DOJ is also considering prohibiting Google from making default search agreements with third-party platforms like Apple. "The remedies under consideration include structural options, such as divestitures of certain assets," the DOJ stated. Read more about those developments here.
In another development, also in the US, TikTok is being sued by 13 US states, including California and New York, along with the District of Columbia, for allegedly designing its app to be addictive for children and failing to protect them. The lawsuits claim TikTok's practices harm youth mental health and expose minors to harmful content. TikTok denies these allegations, asserting it has robust safeguards in place.
