Break Free from the The Worst Advice Real Estate Agents Have Heard for Years

One of the most misguided pieces of advice that real estate agents have been fed for years? "R&D"—Rip off and Duplicate. It’s a catchy phrase, but beneath the surface, the industry phrase can lead agents into a trap, diluting individuality and authenticity in the marketplace.

For years, many agents have been told, "If you see something working for someone else, take that idea and run with it." But here’s an issue: When everyone is duplicating the same ideas, who is actually standing out? Leading to a “sea of sameness,” where originality and uniqueness are drowned out in noise.

Let’s break this down with an example. A Real Estate Association publishes a list of “100 Reasons to Hire an Agent” encouraging all agents to use this list as a "differentiator". A problem? Most of those reasons are standard tasks that agents should already be doing as part of their role— table stakes, if you will. Instead of standing out, agents merely blending in.

What is the unique value that you bring to the table? When agents rely on R&D, it’s easy to lose sight of their special strengths and reduce themselves to a lowest common denominator. Not a win. In fact, a race to the bottom.
