Break the Chain: Time to Redefine Tradition and Mentorship

Have you ever found yourself repeating behavior patterns—not because they’re right, but because “????????’?? ?????? ????’?? ???????????? ???????? ????????”? Recently, two experiences made me pause and reflect on this very question. They made me realize how often we perpetuate cycles of struggle, hierarchy, and negativity—and how powerful it can be to break them.
Let me share my experience with you.
???????????????????? ??: ?????? ???????????????????? ??????????????
A few weeks ago, I was helping a new Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET) navigate stakeholder management and improve his communication skills. To me, it felt like a small but meaningful way to accelerate his growth. But when a friend of mine found out, he was visibly upset.
“Why are you spoon-feeding him?” he asked. “We had to learn the hard way—hand drafting, administrative tasks, and waiting one year just to touch CAD software. That’s how it works. Let him struggle like we did.”
His words stayed with me. Was he right? Should we force others to endure the same challenges we faced simply because we had to? Or is there a better way?
???????????????????? ??: ?????? ?????????? ???? “??????????????”
Around the same time, I was watching an Indian series in which a mother-in-law constantly mistreated her daughter-in-law—overloading her with chores, criticizing her, and making her life difficult. At first, I dismissed it as another stereotypical TV figure. But then, a scene changed my perspective.
When her husband confronted her about her behavior, she replied, “This is what your mother did to me. Now it’s my turn.”
Her words hit me like a ton of bricks. She wasn’t just being cruel—she was trapped in a cycle of mistreatment, passing on the pain she had endured.
?????? ???????????? ????????????: ?????? ???? ???????????? ?????? ????????
Both stories reveal a troubling truth: we often repeat the patterns of the past, even when they no longer serve us. Whether withholding mentorship in the workplace or perpetuating toxic dynamics in relationships, we justify these behaviors by saying, “???????? ???? ?????? ????’?? ???????????? ???????? ????????.”
But here’s the question: ???????? ???? ???? ??????????’?? ???????? ???? ???? ???????? ???????

Imagine a workplace where seniors reflect on challenges and actively mentor their juniors, sharing knowledge and creating growth opportunities. This slight shift could transform entire teams, fostering collaboration, innovation, and trust.
Or
Picture a family where a mother-in-law, instead of repeating the mistreatment she endured, chooses to treat her daughter-in-law with kindness and respect. This single act could redefine family dynamics for generations to come.
"???????????????? ?????? ?????????? ??????’?? ???????? ?????????? ?????????? ?????? ?????????? ??????????—????’?? ?????????? ???????????????? ?? ???????????? ???????????? ???? ???????????????? ????????????"

I’ve committed myself - breaking the chain wherever I see an opportunity. Whether mentoring a junior colleague, challenging outdated norms, or simply treating others with kindness, I believe these small actions can have a positive impact.
And I invite you to join me. Reflect on your own experiences:

1 个月Very Insightful. But a challenge is to find the apt level of mentoring (which should not be a spoon feeding) to help them grow independently. I see current generation comes & ask for final solution, they don't want (don't have that patience) to follow the process which will lead them to that solution.
