Break the Bias: There's Still a Lot of Work to Be Done

Break the Bias: There's Still a Lot of Work to Be Done

The theme for International Women’s Day this year is Break the Bias, and there is still a long way to go to break the bias and achieve gender parity worldwide.??According to the World Bank’s?Women, Business and the Law 2022?report, globally about 2.4 billion women of working age are not afforded equal economic opportunity and 178 countries maintain legal barriers that prevent their full economic participation.

  • There are 86 countries where women face some form of job restriction
  • There are 95 countries that do not guarantee equal pay for equal work. ?
  • Worldwide, 2.4 billion women of working age (15–64 years) from 178 economies across all regions still do not have the same legal rights as men
  • Nearly 30% of economies still restrict women’s freedom of movement
  • Nearly 40% economies have laws constraining women’s decision to join and remain in the labour force
  • In 108 economies, women cannot run a business in the same way as men
  • Nearly 40% of economies limit women’s property rights
  • In 18 economies, a husband can legally prevent his wife from working.
  • Globally, 46 economies still do not have legislation on sexual harassment in employment
  • Only half (95) of all economies mandate equal remuneration for men and women who perform work of equal value
  • One in three women—or approximately 736 million—is subjected to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner or sexual violence by a non partner
  • Of the 190 economies studied, 76 limit women’s property rights
  • In 31 economies a married woman cannot obtain a passport in the same way as a married man
  • In 14 economies a woman cannot leave her home at will

The list goes on, and these figures show there is still a long way to go to achieve gender equity. We can all do our part to break the bias, no matter how big or how small the part you play. Whether it is at home with your children, calling it out in the office, or even campaigning or getting involved on a political level.

The corporate environment is very much favoured towards extroversion and it's often the case of she who shouts loudest gets the recognition, gets the reward, and gets ahead. The quieter ones often get overlooked.?On the Quietly Visible podcast this week I talk about breaking the introvert bias. Click on the podcast link to listen to what I had to say.
