Break Away From the Workday: Meditate With Your Coworkers!

Be honest with yourself – how often are you taking intentional breaks during your workday? (It’s okay if the answer is none).

More often than not, our breaks from work are spent scrolling, scrambling for a snack, or attending to the daily needs of our homes and families. Even more, you may be pushing through the day by working through lunch or not allowing yourself a breath of outside air. It can be challenging to break old patterns when you’re stressed and busy. What if there was another way? And what if you could get your colleagues on board??

Rewire Old Habits by Meditating With Others

When we hear the word “meditation,” we might conjure up an image of the Buddha sitting peacefully atop a hill. Or we might envision a highly focused devotee sitting solo for hours at a time. We rarely think of meditation as a community activity that can take many different forms.

Meditation teachers Dan Harris, Sebene Selassie, and Jeff Warren all teach meditation from varying perspectives. The techniques they offer may all be distinct from one another, but the intention is unanimous: connection with self and others.?

Taking a group meditation break at least once a week is enough to foster a greater connection with yourself and your team members. It takes you out of the hustle and bustle of the workday and brings you back to your body and breath. Afterward, you return to your desk feeling clearer and more focused.

Rest is a Nutrient: Take a Meditation Break at Work

If you’re curious about introducing meditation to your coworkers but don’t know where to start, here are some options:

  • Create a weekly “Lunch & Meditate” where you or a coworker leads the group in a guided 15-minute meditation during lunch. This can be done both in person or remotely.
  • Invest in a company meditation app to listen to guided meditations tailored specifically to the working environment.
  • Designate one room as the office “meditation space,” made solely for a mindful, quiet break from work.
  • Take 5 minutes before the start of a meeting to sit quietly and breathe with your colleagues.
  • If you’re a solo meditator, carve out space in the day to come back to yourself. This can be as simple as taking two deep breaths before sending an email.

We’re Having a Party and You’re Invited!

If you want to take your meditation practice even deeper, we warmly invite you to a Meditation Party with teachers Dan Harris, Sebene Selassie, and Jeff Warren.

Meditation Party: Reckless Conviviality with Mindfulness Superfriends is happening on two separate dates during the 2024 Omega season. Join us on campus, or from the comfort of your home. Invite your friends, coworkers, and loved ones. See you there!
