Brazilian Bikini Line - What You Need to Know ????

Brazilian bikini line hair removal seems to be one of the most requested areas by both male and female clients. Most have previously used razors, depilatory creams, waxing, tweezing or just trimming the unwanted hair. These temporary methods have resulted in razor burn, ingrown hair, pustules, pigmentation changes and never really having the areas look or feel clean. Often the side effects of these techniques result in the area looking worse than if they just left the hair as it was.

I had a male client who waxed most of the bikini line area and when he was assessed the area looked horrific. The skin was covered with ingrown hair, scabs, infection, pigmentation and painful to touch.  He was embarrassed to show me.  Laser was definitely the solution but we had to be careful with settings as his skin was white but with so much dark pigmentation, we had to adjust the settings accordingly. When he completed his 9 regular treatments you were unable to tell it was the same case. The skin was flawless and the hair was gone forever.  As a technician, you feel such satisfaction in making a difference in someone’s life for the better. He walked out of the clinic on cloud nine.

How to prepare for Brazilian Laser Hair Removal

  • If you have waxed or tweezed you must discontinue for at least 3 to 6 weeks before your first session. We need full growth.
  • Lightly exfoliate 4 – 5 days before treatment.
  • Shave the night before your treatment, do NOT shave on the day of your treatment.
  • No moisturizer used on the day of your treatment.
  • Apply a topical anesthetic 1 hour before treatment.

What can I expect after the first laser treatment?

Hair will generally expel while the treatment is being performed as the hair is thick, moist and a great target for laser. Also, you will smell hair burning but it is okay.

The skin will appear red with bumps where the build-up of heat was caused when the laser beam hit its target. This will disappear within a few hours or days.

Hair will start falling out of the follicle within 7 to 10 days just by rubbing the area after a shower.  An ingrown hair will take longer as the skin needs to be exfoliated and over time it will fall out.

Treatments should be scheduled 4 – 6 weeks apart to achieve the best progress and maximize permanent hair reduction of approximately 70% to 90%.

After every treatment, you will see a gradual lessening of hair. The hair will start growing finer, lighter and slower. Most clients do not find it necessary to shave in-between treatments but you can if you wish.

Is the anus included with the Brazilian bikini line?

Each clinic has their individual guidelines for treating various parts of the body. If you want the anus included in the treatment then you must request it and ask if there is an extra fee.

How do I prepare this area if I can not reach it to shave?

It is not the easiest area to shave by oneself but somehow clients find a way. If you feel you have not shaved it completely then advise your technician in advance so that they can have a disposable razor on hand and lightly shave the area prior to treatment.

If a numbing cream is not applied prior to treatment then the clinic should apply a cold compress before treatment and/or use a cooling system. Most often this area has darker pigmentation so settings must be adjusted to not over treat the skin. Make sure that you work away from the mucous membranes as you can burn the skin.

What will happen if I don’t shave to the skin level before laser?

Lasers target the pigmentation of the hair and if the hair is too long, the laser can burn your skin and it will feel more intense or painful to the client.

Note: Do your research to make sure you find a clinic that has the correct laser to treat all skin colours and hair types. Request a detailed consultation so that you feel confident about the knowledge and experience of the technologist that would be treating you. Good Luck.
