In 60 years, Brazilian farmers conquered the world market for this grain
Currently, Brazil is the largest exporter of soy on the planet, having shipped just over 86 million tons of the grain to other countries in 2022. The numbers are from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The data show that Brazilian farmers made a leap in the world market.

In 60 years, Brazil went from producing less than 100 thousand tons of soybeans to the current volume. Expansion occurred as national farmers mastered cultivation techniques. This work was based on the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa).
In partnership with farmers, Embrapa developed plants adapted to the cerrado, which allowed planting in the Midwest. Today, the region is the largest producer in the country.
“The soils of the Cerrado are acidic and poor in nutrients”, comments Rodrigo Justus, legal and environmental consultant for the Sustainability Coordination of the National Agriculture Confederation. He explains that cultivation in these areas would not be possible without correcting the soil. For this, it was necessary to develop “better knowledge, to build soil fertility”.
Justus also commented that, in the past, the region did not attract rural producers. “The savannah was worth nothing, because at most it provided free range cattle, raised extensively”, he recalls. “Today, two crops are planted there a year. This is possible because, in the Brazilian tropical agriculture system, soy is planted, which fills the soil with nitrogen, later absorbed in the planting of corn.”
CURIOSITY ABOUT BRAZILIAN SOY
>>>> the 2022/23 harvest, which began in September with planting work, brings a new record production potential. Once again, Brazilian producers sowed a record area, bringing the possibility of a new overproduction.
