A brave new world of literacy and coding

Impressive the amount of people advancing on educational basis around the world. Back in the 1800's the literacy rate of the world was around 12%. Big advances reaching the world after the second great war, making the literacy rate jump from 42% in 1950s towards around 70% by the 1980s.

Most of the developed countries reached 99% literacy rate. An extensive amount of work to be done, by 2018 Brazil has been around 93% while India around 74%.

North Africa still lagging, with literacy rates below 80%!

According to the Africa Developer Ecosystem (2021, prepared by Google and Accenture), the pool of professionals has increased 3.8% YoY, reaching a total of 716 k developers!! No doubt the increased amount of workers in the sector comes from the demand requirement, hence, the increased salaries.

Mobile and Web are the first entry, with more sophisticated Desktop, Cloud and IOT not well represented - still under domain from other geographies.The startup boom has also found resonance in some countries, with South Africa and Egypt leading the way. But Nigeria is growing strong, and increasing at astonishing 6% YoY!

Although the market is still very concentrated, with 81% of all Venture Capital concentrated in 4 Countries (Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt and Kenya), some other countries, like Ghana, becoming a very attractive center for new tech companies, with Google and Twitter setting up their offices.

As digital technological acceptance and adoption grows, so will the market for locals to develop web and mobile application for their customers to sell more and more on-line.

53% of the coders in Africa still lack formal education! No doubt at all, that Education and lower cost to access information/technology is the pathway to growth! It has always been, it will always drive economies!
