BRAVE the Book now available
It is with immense pride that I am releasing BRAVE, a 100 page hand-illustrated book that celebrates the daily acts of courage taken to carry-on following the daily trials and tribulations of life. Written from the perspective of someone who lives with the effects of a concussion, which are all inspired by true events, each page of this story invites readers to step into the protagonist’s world.
About three years ago I signed up for a general interest course on comics and graphic novels, taught by Fiona Smyth. My illustrating skills at the time did not extend much further beyond drawing stick figures. I was curious about visual narrative storytelling and was open to exploring a new artform. The assignment was to create an 8 page mini-comic, which is the first chapter of the book and inspiration for the entire series. At the time of signing up for this course, I would have never imagined bringing this character to life. Drawing these comics helped me find my inner superhero. In the process of teaching myself to draw, with each page I grew a deeper appreciation for myself and the unusual and incredible ways in which I choose to show up in this world.
Rather than focus on all of the ways in which my life changed following my concussion: all that I could no longer do, all that was left to regain and all that was unknown - BRAVE helped me see that positivity is the ultimate superpower and life is a lot more interesting if you embrace yourself as you are, with your imperfections and all. This book celebrates what is often lost and disregarded in the journey of our pursuits and goals -- that life is lived in the everyday.
