Branding Tips for Introverted Leaders

Branding Tips for Introverted Leaders

Building a personal brand can seem like a daunting task for anyone - especially for introverted leaders out there. The side of branding we are familiar with involves public facing social media content and talking up your unique qualities. While this may naturally appeal to extroverts, it can feel intimidating for introverts. The good news is that introverts bring their own superpowers to the table, including thoughtful strategy, relationship building, and other quiet shows of leadership. Here are a few ways introverted leaders can build their personal brand.

Create content?intentionally.

Contrary to what you might believe, not all branding requires major, public-facing content. Not a fan of sharing pictures or videos of yourself? Lean into writing newsletters, articles, and tweets instead. While social media may make it appear like other leaders are putting out a constant stream of content, it is better to focus on quality over quantity. Be intentional about the content you create and send out into the world, because it will stand long after you’ve hit publish.

Actions speak louder than words.

Your brand as a leader is more than just your title - it revolves around what you believe in. Rather than promote your values by talking about them, take action. For example, if you are a leader at a tech company, you may value tech education for youth. On-brand actions could include funding education efforts for the next generation of techies, or volunteering time teaching skills to youth. Actions take words to a more authentic level.

Lean into one on one communication.

While extroverts may naturally excel at speaking to large groups of people, introverts may find it unnerving. You will never get away from public speaking completely, but you can make time for a form of communication introverts excel at: one on one conversations. As a leader, building deep, meaningful relationships with colleagues and employees can build morale and show others what it means to work with you.

Introverted leaders have their own strengths that lend themselves to help cultivate a strong personal brand. Being intentional about the content you share speaks volumes about your brand. Putting your values into action shows an authentic strategy to branding without showboating. Leaning into comfortable communication benefits not only yourself, but those around you as well. By embracing their introverted qualities, leaders can find themselves on the way to building a thriving personal brand.
