Hotel Figueroa

Located in the heart of Downtown, Hotel Figueroa is just a five-minute walk from the Los Angeles Convention Center. Originally commissioned in 1926 as a YWCA hostel for female travellers before then opening as a Moroccan-inspired hotel, the historic building has just been restored back to its beautiful Spanish Colonial origins, re-opening last year following a meticulous two-year renovation. The original architecture has been fully restored and quirky original features like the coffin-shaped swimming pool remain intact. Artworks by local female artists nod to the hotel’s feminist roots and bold wallpaper prints, terracotta tiled floors and indoor foliage complete the attractive design-led interiors. The on-site restaurant, Brava, offers Basque region inspired cuisine and the two-storey bar, Rick’s, serves tropical cocktails in a casbah-style setting.

The Mayfair Hotel

A few blocks north, The Mayfair Hotel is another new opening with roots dating back to 1926. Housed within a Beaux-Arts building that played host to the first-ever Academy Awards after-party, the hotel has retained many original features, including the stone columns, arches and alcoves in the lobby, while monochrome interiors and Art Deco accents complete the Roaring Twenties aesthetic. The headline restaurant, Eve – named after Eve Cressy in Raymond Chandler’s ‘I’ll Be Waiting’ – serves classic American dishes made with seasonal ingredients and M Bar offers a menu of handcrafted cocktails within the eye-catching lobby. The hotel also has its own coffeehouse, and a large pool deck complete with a bar, resort pool, cabanas and a fitness centre is due to open later in the year.

The NoMad Hotel

Having also opened its doors last year, The NoMad Hotel Los Angeles is a third new addition to Downtown LA. Part of the Sydell Group, who also own The Ned in London as a joint venture with the Soho House Group, the hotel continues the themes found at the original NoMad in New York with elaborate Jacques Garcia designs within a historic city landmark – this time Giannini Place, former home of the Bank of Italy. Many of the original 1920s features remain, including the gold and blue Italianate lobby ceiling, while the velvet, tassels and eclectic artworks are undoubtedly Garcia. Building on their success at The NoMad Hotel New York, chef Daniel Humm and restauranteur Will Guidara are behind the in-house restaurant – one of the hottest tables in town – while the buzzing rooftop is home to a swimming pool, cafe and cocktail bar.

Soho Warehouse

The Soho House Group is also due to move into the area with the summer opening of Soho Warehouse – the group’s third house in Los Angeles. The property will be housed within a five-storey warehouse dating back to 1917 and will sit within the Arts District, so called for its large number of creative studios and street art. The property itself will put art at the forefront with works by local artists on display, and like most Soho House properties, the social spaces will play a key role with three restaurants, six bars and the signature rooftop swimming pool.

Arts District Firehouse Hotel

Transforming a former 1920s firehouse into an intimate boutique hotel, the Arts District Firehouse Hotel is the latest contribution to LA’s rapidly-developing creative hub. Hotelier Dustin Lancaster and designer Sally Breer are behind the development, placing nine individually-designed suites, an industrial-style bar, a coffee bar and a patio restaurant behind the giant red doors and brick facade. Breer created a fictional narrative to inspire the design, following the idea that a mother named Mabel came from Milan to LA in the 1940s to open a boarding house before her daughter, Marta, arrived in the ‘70s and added her wacky touches, creating a classic yet playful element to the interiors. Each of the rooms has its own colour scheme and punctuates historical architectural details with bold new features like a rainbow headboard painted straight onto the wall and a giant linen bed canopy placed between vintage Moroccan pendants.

Palihotel Culver City

Following the likes of Nike and Apple to Culver City – a hip, up-and-coming neighbourhood that’s best known as the home of Sony Pictures – the brand-new Palihotel Culver City opened its doors at the beginning of the year. Located halfway between West Hollywood and Venice, the hotel places guests among an array of design-centric bars, cafes and shops, and a 15-minute drive from the Los Angeles Convention Center. The bold teal blue facade, which features a botanical mural covering the entirety of one wall, hints at the hotel’s design credentials while the eclectic interiors successfully harmonise sleek mid-century furniture with bold colours, wallpaper prints and splashes of chintz. The French-inspired restaurant and bar, Simonette, serves unfussy classics and carefully crafted cocktails overlooking a pretty courtyard set around an oak tree.

Palihotel Westwood Village

Hot on the heels of Palihotel Culver City, Palisociety has just opened its fifth Los Angeles venture, Palihotel Westwood Village. Housed within a historic 1939 building that was once home to the neighbourhood's very first hotel, the 55-room boutique property brings a slice of Parisian charm to the area. The understated yet design-focused interiors place mid-century modern furniture and Osamu Yokonami artworks against a backdrop of period features and neutral tones. The intimate nature of the property leaves no room for a formal restaurant or extensive facilities, but a complimentary continental breakfast is served in the charming communal kitchen and lounge. Expanding the brand further still, Palisociety is set to open Silver Lake Pool & Inn this summer.

Santa Monica Proper Hotel

The much-anticipated Santa Monica Proper Hotel opened its doors just last month, bringing laid-back luxury to Wilshire Boulevard, just moments from the beach. Much like the brand’s inaugural property in San Francisco, interior design expert Kelly Wearstler is responsible for the look and feel of the hotel, decorating the spaces with her signature blend of earth-toned materials, organic textiles and local art, all beautifully harmonised to reference the local coastline. The hotel is also home to the only rooftop pool deck on the Westside, which features a Balearic restaurant, bar and cabanas, while a 3,000-square-foot Ayurvedic Surya Spa and the hotel’s signature restaurant, Onda, will open later in the year. Additionally, the brand is set to open the 148-room Proper Hotel Downtown LA in autumn.

Eco-conscious brand 1 Hotels has just arrived in LA with the opening of 1 Hotel West Hollywood. Located on the site that was formerly home to The Jeremy, the hotel has been given a complete top-to-bottom renovation, placing both design and sustainability at the forefront. Through the use of untreated wood, recycled plastic and zero-waste materials, including chalk slates in place of paper notepads, the hotel successfully delivers on its eco ethos while still offering sophisticated, design-led accommodation. The signature restaurant, 1 Kitchen by Chris Crary, is one of five drinking and dining destinations within the hotel and serves farm-to-table Southern California cuisine made using zero-waste ingredients, of course. On the roof, the plant-lined swimming pool offers sweeping views across the city.

Slated for an early autumn opening, The Hoxton Downtown LA will be the brand’s fourth Stateside property, bringing their ‘open house’ concept to Broadway within the ten-storey former headquarters of the LA Railway Authority. Like all Hoxton properties, the design will be at the forefront, and guests can expect chevron timber floors, bold feature walls, rattan headboards and Art Deco accents. The open-to-all lobby concept will carry through from other Hoxton hotels along with a basement bar and the brand’s very-first rooftop swimming pool.
