The Standard, London
Having opened its doors just this summer, The Standard, London is one of the capital’s hottest new hotels. Transforming a brutalist council office block in King’s Cross into a £20 million five star boutique property, the hotel is the brand’s first opening outside of the US and offers Seventies-inspired, design-led guest rooms and destination dining within the meticulously restored building. The original brutalist facade remains but there’s the striking new addition of a top-floor glass extension – where Michelin-starred chef Peter Sanchez has opened his first restaurant in the capital – and a pillar box red external lift that transports guests directly to the 10th floor. The ground floor, meanwhile, is Adam Rawson’s territory. It’s here that the former Lucky Chip and Pachamama chef heads up all-day coastal-inspired restaurant, Isla, and late-night bar, Double Standard.
(Opened in July 2019)
The Biltmore, Mayfair
Open since September, The Biltmore, Mayfair is the first European property from Hilton’s luxury brand, LXR Hotels & Resorts. Sitting within Grosvenor Square, in the former location of the Millennium Hotel London Mayfair, the hotel has undergone a £50 million renovation and is now home to 308 guest rooms, many of which offer views over the square, and 57 curated suites all designed by Goddard Littlefair, known for the Gleneagles Hotel and Hans’ Bar and Grill in No.11 Cadogan Gardens. Jason Atherton oversees the in-house restaurant, The Betterment, where an open grill sits at the heart of the dining room to add a sense of theatre to the experience.
(Opened in September 2019)
The Hoxton, Southwark
Also open since September, The Hoxton, Southwark is the third London opening from the pioneering social hotel brand. Occupying the lower six floors of a 14-storey new build on Blackfriars Road, the hotel brings the brand's image-conscious interiors, buzzing social spaces and hipster vibe south of the river. The 192 guest rooms blend concrete ceilings and bare brick walls with panelled headboards, leather lounge chairs and retro accents to create an urban yet high-end design while the lobby continues the brand’s dedication to offering a space for locals and guests alike to work, rest or play. There is also a dedicated co-working space and a rooftop restaurant.

Belmond Cadogan
The brand-new Belmond Cadogan is the second UK hotel from the group behind Raymond Blanc’s luxury hotel-restaurant Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons. Setting up home in the very building where Lillie Langtry courted the Prince of Wales and Oscar Wilde once resided (it was also the location of the playwright’s infamous arrest), the new hotel is equidistant from Chelsea and Knightsbridge, placing guests in one of London’s most upmarket and fashionable districts. The 54 rooms and suites pay tribute to the building’s colourful past while still offering every modern indulgence and the in-house restaurant is overseen by celebrated chef Adam Handling. Guests also have access to the tranquil Cadogan Place Gardens, usually reserved for locals only.
(Opened in February 2019)
The Dixon
Part of the Marriott Autograph Collection, The Dixon is a brand new boutique hotel set within a former Magistrates’ Court and police station. Named after John Dixon Butler – the architect responsible for designing the historic Grade II listed building – the hotel takes inspiration from its surroundings to create a stylish blend of old and new. Original features such as the courthouse still remain while contemporary interiors made up of exposed brickwork, pieces by local artists and British-designed furniture ensure the hotel appeals to the most discerning of modern travellers. The on-site Courthouse cafe references the building’s history with repurposed furniture reclaimed from the old courthouse.
(Opened in February 2019)
The Stratford Hotel
Occupying the seven lower levels of an extraordinary double cantilevered, 42 storey skyscraper, The Stratford Hotel signals the neighbourhood’s move towards becoming a major cultural hub – further assisted by the forthcoming opening of V&A East and a new Sadler’s Wells Theatre. The Manhattan Loft Corporation, the firm responsible for bringing loft living to the UK in 1992 and, more recently, the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and Chiltern Firehouse, is behind the 145-room hotel, which comprises several restaurants and bars, a 24-hour gym, a spa and, most excitingly of all, a seventh-floor sky garden. The triple-height lobby and imposing glass atrium hint at the hotel’s design credentials while the interiors, created by Space Copenhagen, offer an aesthetically pleasing blend of pastel tones, natural wood and inviting stone bathrooms.
(Opened in July 2019)
Vintry & Mercer
Named after the area’s historic trading guilds, Vintry & Mercer is a plush new hotel appropriately dressed in leather, velvet, fine silk and bespoke fabrics – a homage to the merchants who used to trade their wares in the surrounding livery halls and guilds. Historic trading maps, ceramic tiles and palm leaf wall prints also echo the neighbourhood’s trading roots while contemporary features and decorative touches, such as a chandelier by Moooi, are in sync with the area’s new modern identity. The Mercer Roof Terrace provides the chance to dine al fresco above the City skyline while the subterranean speakeasy, Do Not Disturb, takes inspiration from 1920s Manhattan.

Hard Rock Hotel London
In the same year that London launched a new flagship Hard Rock Cafe in Piccadilly Circus, the brand-new Hard Rock Hotel London opened its doors. A twenty-minute walk from the original Hard Rock Cafe, which opened on Park Lane back in 1971, the behemoth 900-room hotel sits on the corner of Oxford Street and Park Lane, placing it near Marble Arch and Hyde Park. A large lobby lounge has been designed with both cocktails and live music in mind while carefully curated memorabilia reference the site’s musical past – Jimi Hendrix, Nina Simone and Bob Dylan are all former residents. There is, of course, a Hard Rock Cafe on site along with a Rock Shop, a restaurant and a speakeasy bar. Rooms come equipped with the signature Sound of Your Stay and Rock Om experiences while the Rock Royalty suites include a personal concierge and access to a private lounge.
(Opened in June 2019)
Inhabit Hotel
With mindfulness at the centre of its philosophy, the brand-new Inhabit hotel promises a place to rest and rejuvenate in a quiet corner of Paddington. The hotel sits within six townhouses and comprises 89 individually designed rooms, each with the common theme of Scandi, British and Eastern influences to create a bright and airy space featuring bespoke artwork, earthy tones and plenty of plants. The on-site kitchen serves a menu curated by Yeotown – the brand responsible for London’s first mindfulness cafe – while the pantry comes stocked with healthy snacks courtesy of small businesses and organic suppliers. The hotel also features special meditation pods with guided meditations created by Yeotown founder Mercedes Sieff and its own retail store with everything needed to continue your wellness journey at home.

Mama Shelter London
Born in Paris back in 2008, the playful Mama Shelter hotel group arrived in London in September with the opening of Mama Shelter London on Hackney Road. A collaboration between the Trigano family (co-founders of Club Med) and revered designer Philippe Starck, the brand is known for opening properties in lesser-known neighbourhoods of big cities, allowing guests to explore new creative corners. This new opening is no different, sitting between Cambridge Heath and Bethnal Green, close to some of the capital’s most exciting restaurants, bars and cafes. With Philippe Starck’s named attached, it comes as no surprise that the 195-room property has a strong focus on design with cutting-edge interiors courtesy of French designer Cion & Arles. Tongue-in-cheek features include vintage lamps and a twist on the English lace doily along with Liberty prints and dark wood furnishings. All rooms come with complimentary films, WiFi and Mama Skin beauty products while Japanese-style karaoke rooms featuring pinball machines, retro video games and classic 50s-style microphones add another playful element.
