Is Brand Activism Over? What Small Businesses Need to Know ???

Peace Friends,

The conversation around brand activism has taken an interesting turn. Some industry experts suggest that the era of bold, value-driven campaigns is fading. Marketing Brew’s recent piece, “Is the Era of Brand Activism Over?”, explores this shift, but as a small business expert, I can assure you that consumers still expect businesses, big and small, to align with and share their values.

Inclusion isn’t just a trend. It’s a cornerstone of 21st century business. Whether you’re engaging with your audience during Black History Month, Pride, or Ramadan, celebrating your customers' identities authentically strengthens relationships and builds trust. For my avid readers, you’ve already heard me rave about Designing for Ramadan by Peter Gould . This work offers a thoughtful perspective on how businesses can honor and celebrate Ramadan through intentional design. Recently, I also came across an inspiring example on Instagram of a marketing and design studio guiding brands to celebrate Ramadan with their Muslim consumers in ways that feel genuine and impactful.

Small businesses are uniquely positioned to lead with purpose. Whether it’s through thoughtful product offerings, community engagement, or culturally relevant campaigns, embracing inclusion is not just good ethics. It’s good business!

So biz owners — continue building spaces where everyone feels seen, valued, and celebrated.
