According to a recent study by RBR Data Services, the global landscape of bank branches is undergoing a significant transformation in 2024. The proliferation of Assisted Self-Service Terminals (ASSTs) is reshaping traditional banking operations, providing a bridge between teller services and self-service channels.
As the number of branches worldwide continues to decline, banks are keen on optimizing efficiency while expanding services. The study reveals that the teller role is evolving, with a focus on sales and advisory activities rather than routine transactions. Teller Assist Units (TAUs) are streamlining cash operations at counters, but the shift towards self-service is evident through the growing adoption of ASSTs.
In 2023, ASSTs witnessed a remarkable 12% growth, reaching nearly 40,000 installations in key markets. Notably, over 60% of these are video devices, extending service hours and geographical reach. The USA leads in video installations, while in-person ASSTs are more common in other regions like Italy and Turkey, where a preference for cost-effectiveness and face-to-face banking persists.
Looking ahead, the study forecasts a continued rise in ASST installations, reaching 58,700 by 2028. Despite concerns in some markets about costs and customer acceptance, ASST penetration is expected to grow globally. Gillian Shaw, leader of the research, emphasizes the unique benefits of ASSTs in enabling modern branch formats.
