Brain Syncrony - "being on the same wavelength" proven to be true by neuroscience!

Brain Syncrony - "being on the same wavelength" proven to be true by neuroscience!

I have long suspected that there is some magical interaction between a Neurolanguage Coach and his/her coachee! Through all those years when I was running in and out of companies with all my corporate clients, 20 years ago, carrying a portfolio of about 50 clients by myself, I often heard my clients say things like “you are so different Rachel!” or “You are a world apart from any other “language teacher we have had before!”. When I sat down in 2012 and actually crystalised what I was doing into the concept of Neurolanguage Coaching, it was honestly the beginning of so many discoveries and now neuroscience is justifying it more and more! And the secret magic is “brain wave syncronisation”.

Already in 2020, we had research showing how the brains of an audience seem to syncronise with musicians, with the conclusion that “music appreciation involves the brains of music producers and perceivers in a temporally aligned network through which audiences perceive the intentions of the performer and show positive emotions related to the musical performance.” So, the study finds that the greater the degree of synchrony, the more the audience enjoys the performance. This perhaps confirms what we already suspected: ?musical experience runs deep within us and when?we dance and feel the same emotions together, and our neurons fire together as well. (Yingying Hou, Bei Song, Yinying Hu, Yafeng Pan, Yi Hu, The averaged inter-brain coherence between the audience and a violinist predicts the popularity of violin performance, NeuroImage, Volume 211, 2020, 116655)

Collective neuroscience is researching this phenomena and is a rapidly growing field of research. So far, the consistent finding is that when people talk together or we share experiences, our brain waves synchronize. This means that neurons in key locations of the different brains fire at the same time in each person. Yet again, I find it fascinating how our linguistic expressions precede our scientific findings. Of course, I am referring to "being on the same wavelength", which now in fact is demonstrated to be REAL!,

Last year 2023, we had research demonstrating that “Brain-to-brain synchrony between students and teachers predicted learning outcomes at an approximately 300-ms lag in the students’ brain activity relative to the teacher’s brain activity, which is consistent with the time course of spoken-language comprehension.”? EUREKA! My suspicions have been confirmed ! (Ido Davidesco, Emma Laurent, Henry Valk, et al., The Temporal Dynamics of Brain-to-Brain Synchrony Between Students and Teachers Predict Learning Outcomes, Volume 34, Issue 5 | May 2023 ?https://doi.org/10.1177/09567976231163872)

In Scientific American July 1st, there was an article called Brain Waves Synchronize when People Interact by Lydia Denworth. Lydia beautifully states “Such work is beginning to reveal new levels of richness and complexity in sociability. In classrooms where students are engaged with the teacher, for example, their patterns of brain processing begin to align with that teacher's—and greater alignment may mean better learning.” Personally, I would change the “may” to “DOES” as we get such incredible results from our learners when we engage in the Neurolanguage Coaching process, due to our deeper understanding of brain waves and brain states: how we communicate with our clients using a professional non-directive coaching conversation throughout and how to match our process to the science of learning and how the brain likes to learn.

So, brain synchrony or as scientists call it “interbrain synchrony” is real. When we think, feel and act in response to others our brains align with each other. Neurons start to fire in each brain, and as interaction continues the firing, timing and location become more and more similar. Apparently the stronger the relationship, the stronger the extent of the synchrony. In our case, when there is great rapport coach and coachee, with profound coaching conversations, deep empathy and compassion and effective transfer of knowledge, the greater the brains of coach and coachee synchronise and potentially the more effective the learning becomes!

I am really looking forward to more and more research along these lines over the next years. In the meantime, join me on Saturday morning for a journey into Brain states and Learning and whether the perfect learning state exists!

Great article! Is this phenomenon related to the notion of mirror neurons?

Your observations about the interaction between a Neurolanguage Coach and coachee are indeed intriguing. The concept of brain wave synchronization is an evident phenomenon in neuroscience, and it's fascinating to see how it applies to your field. Your Neurolanguage Coaching approach seems to be at the forefront of harnessing this scientific understanding to enhance learning. By using a professional non-directive coaching conversation and tailoring your process to the science of learning, you're creating a conducive environment for brain wave synchronization. This could very well be the 'magic' that sets you apart from traditional language teachers. Keep exploring these connections between neuroscience and coaching. Your work is making a valuable contribution to our understanding of how the brain learns, and how we can use this knowledge to improve educational outcomes.
